LAUREL—The first snow of the season struck here Monday when a junior-sized blizzard moved in. Strong northwesterly winds were the order of the day. Sleet began to fall by mid-afternoon and soon turned to heavy snow leaving behind one and a half inches.

LAUREL — Officers investigated damage done in a vacant apartment in the old hotel building. Most of the windows were broken, furniture smashed, doors kicked in and articles strewn about.

LAUREL — The Laurel Fire Department was called to the Jens Jacobsen farm Monday, November 17 at about 10 a.m. Jim Jacobsen had just filled a tractor with gas and had walked away to do something else and when he turned around the tractor was on fire.

LAUREL — Placing high in the Viking Lanes Bowling Tournament at Wausa were Don Tangeman, Willard Tangeman and Don Casey. Leona Bass placed in the women’s singles.

LAUREL — Last Thursday 19 individuals representing ambulance units from Laurel, Coleridge and Randolph graduated from an Emergency Medical Technician-course. The ceremonies were held at the Wagon Wheel Steakhouse. The six month long course is set forth by the Nebraska State Health Department, the Nebraska Highway Safety Program, the U.S. Department of Transportation National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. A total of 81 hours included training in all types of emergency service from broken legs and arms to heart attacks and training in removing victims from wrecked vehicles. They also spent eight hours training in hospitals in Sioux City and Omaha. Members of the group were: Mrs. Marvin Christensen, Mrs. Bob Mason, Mrs. Jim Joslin, Mrs. Harry Calhoon, Mrs. Kendall Martin, Bob Yost, Larry Paulsen, Harold White, Dean Bruggeman, Don Feelhaver, Rollie Granquist, Bob Mason, Dean Benson, Ole Mallatt, Rev. Douglas Potter, Henry Walz, Rev. Olin Knudsen, John McCorkindale, Mark Dendinger and Art Anderson, instructor. The individuals each hold certificates designating them as registered “EMT-A” graduates. Art Anderson of Bloomfield was the instructor.

LAUREL — Laurel’s businessmen are trying to cut the cost of your Thanksgiving dinner this year by giving away 35 turkeys. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday of this week, Laurelites and area residents are eligible to register at participating businesses. Saturday night after business hours each merchant will draw for one turkey. The turkey drawing is sponsored with the Chamber of Commerce.

LAUREL — Grandparents Day was held at the Laurel School during American Education Week. Special awards for the day were presented to Mrs. Edgar Schmitt, most grandchildren (7) in school; Mr. and Mrs. W.F. Monson of Osceola, traveling the longest distance; Mrs. Fern Arduser, Mrs. Olga Bebee, Mrs. Lela Tuttle, Mrs. Florence Johnson, Sophie Test and Richard Carlson, great grandparents attending. Mrs. Elmer Schutte, oldest grandparent graduate of Laurel (1927).
