LCC girls just miss out on trip to State Volleyball

Nov. 13, 2019

LAUREL — In the words of Dr. Seuss, “Unless someone like you cares an awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” On Thursday, Nov. 7, the Youth Philanthropy Showcase was held at the Laurel Learning Center to celebrate the completion of the first year of Youth Philanthropy Projects.

There were three projects by two different groups. Kennedy Hall, Coleridge, made Birthday Bags to help kids have birthday parties when their families might not be able to afford it. The birthday bags are available at the Coleridge Christians Caring Food Pantry at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Coleridge, 402-283-4547.

The other two projects were from Bit & Bridle 4-H Club. They added a Stand-and-Spin to the play equipment by the Laurel pool house, and two pieces of fitness equipment to the walking trail on the west side of Haskell Football field. “A healthy community is a better community,” said Maddy Graham, a Bit & Bridle 4H Club member. These additions are installed and ready to be used. These kids chose projects to make a change in their communities that they wanted to see. They worked on budgets, made the purchases and did the work on their projects.

WEST POINT — Laurel- Concord- Coleridge came up one match short of reaching the state tournament, falling in a three-set match to fourth-seeded Archbishop Bergan in the D1-4 district final at West Point-Beemer High School.

The Lady Bears, winners of the D1-4 subdistrict a week earlier, found themselves in a tough battle with the Knights. LCC played well in the early going and kept things close before Bergan claimed the first set 25-20, and couldn’t keep pace after that as Bergan won the final two sets by identical scores of 25-16 to earn the trip to the state tournament.

Erica Wolfgram led the Lady Bears in kills with seven, while Makayla Forsberg and Delaney Ehlers each had six. Kinsey Hall and Erica Benson had three kills apiece and Berniece McCorkindale added two. Hall had 19 assists, Ehlers and Jordynn Urwiler each had two and Wolfgram and Forsberg both had one. Forsberg, Ehlers and Wolfgram each had two ace serves and McCorkindale added another.

Benson had the team’s only block in the match. In the digs department, Forsberg and Hall each had seven, Ehlers had six, Urwiler and McCorkindale had three apiece, Wolfgram added two and Benson, Haley Christensen and Kaylee Donner each had one. The Lady Bears ended the season with a 17-13 record.

LAUREL — On Tuesday, Nov. 5, LCC Teammates came together to play board games, eat snacks and spend quality time together. A total of 66 mentees and mentors were in attendance. “It was great to see mentees and mentors interact that normally wouldn’t have,” said Co-coordinator, Shawna Ranslem.”There were mentees and mentors that weren’t attending with their respective match and mentees that are waiting to be matched. It was a great mix of everyone having fun and working together.”
