1964: Laurel Bear gridiron win streak reaches 19

COLERIDGE — The members participating in the Gold Buck Drawing each Saturday have announced eight turkeys will be given away as an “extra” before the drawing for the Gold Bucks.

LAUREL- Pictured in the Advocate is an artist’s conception of what the new addition to the high school would look like if approved by voters at a special election Dec. 7.

The proposal calls for authorization of the issuance of $710,000 in bonds. This amount would cover the cost of not only construction of the addition, but also items of equipment for education. For instance, $5,500 will be earmarked for home economics fixed equipment and $8,300 for science equipment and acid proof plumbing. The building itself will be a steel joist structure with brick faced concrete block walls on the outside and painted block walls within. The fire alarm system would be extended from the present educational plant.

LAUREL — A determined Laurel football team stretched their winning streak to 19 by trouncing Creighton 56-0, thus completing the second undefeated season. A great team effort put the game in the Laurel ledger the first quarter.

The 12 Laurel seniors were given considerable playing time in the last football game as high school players.

These 12 seniors aided by the rest of the team made sure that Laurel would end the 1964 season as one of the top class B teams in the state.

LAUREL- Dean Karnes was the winner in last week’s tail feather contest with his 23 3/4 inch feather.

COLERIDGE — The Cedar County Tuberculosis Committee officially opened its annual Christmas Seal Campaign Monday when they delivered 2500 envelopes to the Post Office containing sheets of seals and the traditional accompanying letter. Contributions are used to carry on the fight against tuberculosis and other respiratory diseases.

COLERIDGE — A Coleridge delegation of 53 persons, headed by Mrs. Seth Anderson, brought home the second place prize in the “under 800” class in the Community Betterment Contest Friday evening at the Awards Banquet in Lincoln.

COLERIDGE — Robert Yost has received an Honorable Mention from the Special Recognition Committee of the Nebraska State Volunteer Fireman’s Association during the past week.

COLERIDGE — The Lewis and Clark Conference championship was won Friday evening by Coleridge as they defeated Cedar Catholic 34-6. Spoiling the Cedar Catholic Homecoming the Bulldogs smashed their opponents in an almost errorless victory.

COLERIDGE — Mr. and Mrs. Ben H. Dirks of Hartington will celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary with an open house Nov. 16 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church basement.

LAUREL- Phil Dalton has been named Most Valuable Player of the 1974 Laurel Bears gridiron season, it was announced at the annual football banquet Tuesday at the school auditorium.

The MVP selection was made by a vote of the team members. The honor is reserved for a senior player, chosen by teammates, for his ability and leadership.

Dalton and Greg Wendel were chosen as the co-captains for the Laurel Bears.

More than 150 players, parents, coaches and guests attended the banquet sponsored by the football squad mothers.

Dozens more joined the group to hear guest speaker, Bob Devaney, University of Nebraska athletic director and former Cornhusker football coach.

LAUREL- Lori Chace, daughter of Dr. and Mrs Walter R. Chace Jr., of Laurel has been awarded the Albert and Ethel Dreier scholarship at the Univ. of Nebraska-Lincoln. Miss Chace is a senior in education and family resources at NU. Robert Gadeken, son of Mrs. Gertude Gadeken of Laurel has been awarded a Kathrine Melick Scholarship.
