1954: Coach Norvell congratulates players on great season

COLERIDGE — The Coleridge fire department answered a call to the Lee Wilcox farm about noon Tuesday to put out a fire in a clover field. Cause of the fire, which did little damage, is unknown.

COLERIDGE — The local American Legion Auxiliary has sent 30 gifts to the gift shop at the Veterans hospital in Omaha.

Veterans who are patients at the hospital select items from the gift shop to send to their loved ones for Christmas gifts.

COLERIDGE — Lowell Hunter was the lone member of the Coleridge football team to be named to the Corntassel conference all-star football team which was selected by coaches of member schools at a meeting held at Crofton Monday evening.

COLERIDGE — Frieda I. Andreesen, Home Agent, will be featured on the Siouxland Farmer program to be televised over KVTV, Sioux City, on Monday, November 22 at 12:45 p.m. Her topic will be “Making and Purchasing Toys.”

COLERIDGE — Over 400 4-H members, their families and club leaders attended the Achievement Party at the city auditorium in Hartington Friday to see the county 4-H project champions.

LAUREL- Following the theme of “Conference Champs,” the Laurel football squad, their fathers and male members of the school faculty and their guests enjoyed a very fine banquet in the church parlors of the Presbyterian Church Wednesday.

The toastmaster was Supt. E.J. Davis, who introduced the first speaker, Coach Bill Norvell.

The coach opened his talk by his summary of the squad, their desire to play and their will to win and placed that as the keynote of their season’s success.

He then presented the letter awards to: Seniors: Eldon Haisch, Dick Rimel, Bob Taylor, Harold Thompson, Ronnie Jensen, Don Thompson, Richard Schutte and Bill Urwiler. Juniors: Bob Ahntholz, Verneal Gade, Vonnie Tangeman, Don Lipp, Duane Burns, Clark Heydon and Bill Mallatt. Sophomores: Rodney Johnson, Dan Dresden and Ronnie Chederquist.

Members of the All-Conference teams were also announced by Coach Norvell. They were: First Team-Jensen, D. Thompson, Heydon, Mallatt and Burns. Second Team: Gade and Lipp.

LAUREL — Donovan Schuler, Laurel, was recently elected president of the Neb. State Teachers College Choir. Schuler, a sophomore at Wayne State, was graduated from Laurel High School in 1946. He is the son of Mrs. Lottie Grant.

LAUREL- First Lieutenant Robert Buss was a Thursday overnight guest in the Virgil Buss home. He landed at the Sioux City Air Base on a cross-country flight in a jet plane.

COLERIDGE — Four members of the Coleridge Community School football squad were named to the Corntassel Conference all-conference team at a meeting held here Wednesday, Nov. 11. They are: Roger Fleener and ValDean Dittman, seniors; Gary Meier, junior; and Tom Morrison, sophomore.

COLERIDGE — Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Peck were honored at a dinner and luncheon at their home Sunday in observance of their 25th wedding anniversary. The event was planned by their children.

COLERIDGE — Old man winter, seemingly determined to set some early season records, blasted away in this area again the past week, as an estimated additional 10 inches of snowfall was received.

The snowfall, which arrived Wednesday night, November 11 and continued most of the day Thursday, blocked numerous rural roads and again stalled the already late corn husking.
