Former residents die in car crash

HARRISBURG, S.D. — Former Hartington grocery store owners Arnie and Rita Topf died in a two-vehicle collision Saturday, three miles south of Harrisburg, S.D.

Initial reports from the South Dakota Highway Patrol suggest that a 1999 Ford F-250, operated by Jeffrey Joneson, 59, Harrisburg, was going south on S.D. Highway 115. At the same time, a 2019 Toyota Camry, driven by Topf, 79, was traveling east on 276th Street when they collided. The collision resulted in both vehicles ending up in the ditch.

Both Arnie and Rita Topf, who was a passenger in the vehicle, were pronounced dead at the scene. Joneson was uninjured.
