LAUREL — On Oct. 31, Señora Camargo and 23 enthusiastic Spanish students from Laurel-Concord-Coleridge High School traveled to Central City High School for an unforgettable cultural experience.
These students, a mix from Spanish 2, Spanish 3, and the LCC Spanish Club, joined peers from nine other schools for an educational Spanish language concert with a Puerto Rican flair.
At the heart of the event was Edgar Rene, an engaging performer who captured students’ attention with lively Spanish tunes, interactive activities, and heartfelt stories.
Through energetic songs, tongue-twister challenges, and Latin music instrument lessons, students eagerly connected with the Spanish language in a way textbooks alone could never provide.
The concert wasn’t only about language, though. Rene shared his journey of learning English as a native Spanish speaker, encouraging students to stay positive, set meaningful goals, and lean on their support systems when challenges arise. This message resonated with many, including Macie Swanson, a Spanish 1 and Spanish Club member, who shared, “I liked when he was giving a speech about him learning English. I also liked singing along to the music.”
The high-energy crowd embraced every moment, from salsa dancing to drumming, and Mavis Jonas, a Spanish 2 student, summed it up perfectly: “He was really upbeat and fun. He made it enjoyable to listen to.” Highlights included Laney Folkers mastering the Latin drum, Yasmine Miranda and Darly Garcia-Perez learning salsa on stage, and Tanner Thompson stepping up to participate.
With around 10 schools present, including students from Fullerton, Columbus High, and Palmer, the event proved to be an inspiring blend of music, language, and life lessons—a concert LCC students are sure to remember.
