Cedar County voters give approval for Keno

HARTINGTON – Cedar County residents will soon be able to play keno in more establishments.

Cedar County voters overwhelmingly approved allowing keno lottery gaming by a vote of 3,185 for to 1,477 against.

The owners of Backroad BBQ in South Yankton asked the county to put the issue on the ballot.

The county stands to net about 10 percent of the net revenue from keno gaming with the proceeds repurposed for “community betterment.”

Some counties or municipalities use lottery proceeds in their general funds to help offset property taxes, while others save it for a special project.

How much revenue it can bring in all depends on how much keno is played.

Also Tuesday, voters in the southern half of the county voted to give Mike Meier, Laurel, a four-year term on the Cedar County Board of Commissioners. Meier will take the seat currently held by Craig Bartels, Belden.

Bartels decided not to seek another term in office. Meier faced John Thelen, Randolph, in the primary election, but ran unopposed in the general election.

In other local races, Hartington City Council members Chris Bartling and Roman Sudbeck were unopposed and were re-elected to four-year terms on the Board.

Hartington-Newcastle School patrons returned two incumbents to office and selected Brett Wiedenfeld to join them on the board. Wiedenfeld received the most votes of any candidate with 1,293 Cedar County votes.

Incumbents Aaron Fuelberth and Jason Heikes were the next biggest vote-getters with 1,180 and 1,032 Cedar County votes, respectively. Brice Grutsch finished fourth with 730 votes.

Wiedenfeld, who works at the Bank of Hartington, will replace Dana Rosener on the Board. Rosener decided not to seek another term on the board after serving several terms on the Newcastle and then the Hartington-Newcastle School Board.

Hartington Airport Authority Board members Gayle Hochstein and Darrell Kathol were also both unopposed.

The Coleridge Village Board had six people seeking three spots on the Board.

Brenda Lage easily won election as she received the most votes with 183.

Tony Kalin and Terrill Cook also earned spots on the board with 152 and 145 votes, respectively.

LeRoy Cautrell, Dennis Heitman and Jesse Jackson were also competing for spots on the board.
