Central Valley ends Wynot’s football season

WOLBACH —The Wynot Blue Devils travelled to Wolbach on Friday to do battle with the Central Valley Cougars and got severely mauled.

The Cougars built a 36-6 halftime lead as they advanced in the playoffs to take on Archangel Catholic in the next round.

The Cougars got on the board first set up by a 39 yard screen pass from Zaden Wolf to Taesian Soto. From there Grady Kelley powered up the middle for a 15 yard touchdown. The PAT run was stopped as Central Valley led 6-0.

The Blue Devils struggled to find their offense in the early going.

Central Valley mounted a time consuming ground attack for their next score. Gains of eight and nine yards by Zaden Wolf and a 14-yard run by for another first down by Grady Kelley got the ball deep into Blue Devil territory. Landon Shoemaker ran the ball in on an option pitch over the left side for the 6 yard touchdown. Wolf connected with Taesian Soto for the PAT and Central Valley had built their lead to 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.

After an exchange of punts the Cougars would strike quickly on the next possession. Boston Wood would get behind the Blue Devil secondary and Zaden Wolf would hit him in stride for a 29 yard touchdown pass. Wolf ran in the PAT as the Cougars lead had grown to 22-0.

Wynot would answer on their next possession. Killian Steinhaus found an opening in the Cougar defense for a 22 yard catch and run. Andrew Haberman would scamper over the left side for the 10 yard touchdown run. The PAT was no good but the Blue Devils were on the board trailing 22-6.

Central Valley answered quickly as Wolf unloaded a 51-yard scoring bomb to Boston Wood. Wolf also hit Taesian Soto for the extra points. The Cougars were cruising with the 30-6 lead.

Central Valley put up one more score in the final minutes of the opening half. After a shanked punt by Wynot the Cougars capitalized with a six-yard touchdown run by Zaden Wolf. The PAT run was stopped as Central Valley had taken command, leading 36-6 at the half.

Central Valley needed one more score to implement the running clock and they got it early in the third quarter. Wolf would hook up with his favorite target Boston Wood on a 34 yard touchdown pass. The two also combined for the PAT to make the score 44-6.

Wynot’s quarterback Devin Brummer went out with an injury and Andrew Haberman was forced to replace him. Neither team would mount a scoring threat the rest of the third quarter.

Subs were sprinkled in to finish the final quarter of play and there was no further scoring.

“We got beat by a very good athletic team in Central Valley. We had a good season and our seniors will be missed. I am proud of this team’s accomplishments this year, “ said Wynot coach Steve Heimes.

Wynot’s season ends at 8-3, while Central Valley keeps their hopes alive as the Cougars advance to play Archangel Catholic in the next round.
