Lady Bears come up just short of State

BATTLE CREEK - The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Lady Bears volleyball team completed arguably one of its finest seasons in program history, but one match short of where it wanted to be.

Battle Creek defeated the Lady Bears 25-18, 22-25, 25-19 and 25-15 in the Class C1-8 District Final to sideline them for the season with a 25-5 record.

LCC managed to win the second set by the 25-22 final score, but the Bravette’s defense was too much and the Lady Bears fell and ironically, the first match of the season was a loss to Battle Creek and the last match of the campaign was also a loss to the Bravettes.

Rena Rasmussen and Carlie Kvols paced the Lady Bears with a pair of doubledoubles that included 19 kills and 15 digs for Rasmussen and 19 digs and 33 set assists for Kvols.

Lainey Schutte played a solid back row with 17 digs and 16 successful serve receives or passes, Kaida Eriksen was also solid with six winners, 22 digs and 19 quality passes.

Laurel-Concord-Coleridge arrived in the district final via a wildcard as the Lady Bears were also defeated in the C1-5 Sub-District Finals by Clarkson/Leigh in Clarkson on Oct. 29, 28-26, 25-21 and 25-23.

Although the match was a sweep, the match was very. very tight through its entirety with the Lady Patriots pulling out the win in each set at the end.

Rasmussen had another double-double with 20 kills and 13 digs. Eriksen just missed her double-double with nine kills and 11 digs, Kvols just missed hers with 33 assists and nine digs. Tali Erwin had six kills, a couple of ace serves, two stuffs at the net, 18 digs, eight quality passes and a partridge in a pear tree. Although the Lady Bears finished their season with a couple of losses, they were definitely high quality teams as both of those teams will be playing in the C1 State Tournament this week.
