Lady Trojans sideline Lady Wildcats

HARTINGTON —The Cedar Catholic Lady Trojans sidelined the Hartington-Newcastle Lady Wildcats with a 25-19, 25-10 and 25-16 sweep in the finals of the D1-3 Sub-District Tournament at the Msgr. Werner Activities Center Oct. 29 sending the Lady Trojans to a district final.

While the end result was exactly what the Lady Trojans were hoping for, the start of Tuesday’s game was far from it.

The Lady Wildcats took an early 7-2 lead in the first set against Cedar in the SubDistrict title game.

That lead vanished once Lauren Bernecker got on the service line, though. The Cedar Catholic senior served up four straight points, inlcuding two aces, to pull within one, 7-6.

The Lady Trojans were able to tie the game at 9-9 after a long volley. Cedar then outscored the Lady Cats 16-7 to claim the first set win.

“This was a good team win, everyone had their moment to shine,” Cedar Catholic coach Denae Buss said.

“We blocked well, we ran our defense and turned the digs into kills and we were smart and mixed up our hits. We served well and moved the ball around.”

Lauren Bernecker had a big night for the Lady Trojans with eight kills, five ace serves, 1 block, seven digs and six successful passes.

Katelyn Arens added six winners, Melayna McGregor had five, Addison Walter had four, Brynn Bernecker and Anisten Wortmann each had three, Lyndsey Hamilton two and McKinlee Lammers had one.

McGregor and Hamilton had 13 and 11 set assists respectively and Hamilton had three ace serves, Walter registered one.

Defensively, Brynn Bernecker had five blocks at the net, Bailey Hochstein accumulated 15 digs and had 18 quality service receptions and passes.

McKenzie Bruning paced the Lady Wildcats with eight kills in the match, Maddie Steffen and Vayda Lippert each had five.

“We were an inexperienced team when the season started,” said HNS coach Sarah Edwards. “But we have put in the time and effort to improve and it showed.”

Lippert had 11 set assists and 11 digs for a doubledouble while Hazel Hochstein tipped up five assists.

Ella Eickhoff had a pair of stuffs at the net, Abi Rice had 23 solid passes in the match.

The Lady Wildcats finished the season with a 10-20 record, the Lady Trojans moved on for a district final with Kenesaw.
