District title for State Tny. berth
ALBION — Cedar Catholic used a tight, five-set win here at Boone Central High School to advance to the Class D1 Nebraska Volleyball Championships beginning on Nov. 7 at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln.
In fact, the match was so close, neither team led by more than four points as the Lady Trojans grabbed the win by a 23-25, 26-24, 23-25, 27-25 and 17-15 final.
Each set was a win by the required two points and three of the sets had to go to extra points to decide the winner.
“It was a wild match, I was really proud of our resiliency and our confidence,” said Cedar Catholic coach, Denae Buss. “It is something we have really had to work on those kind of situations with the schedule we have had.”
Melayna McGregor had a great match, recording a triple-double with 18 kills, 15 digs and 20 set assists.
Lauren Bernecker and Lyndsey Hamilton each had double-doubles. Bernecker had 12 winners and 12 digs, Hamilton had 13 digs and 33 assists. Addison Walter had a dozen digs and five blocks.
Brynn Bernecker and Anisten Wortmann each tacked on seven slams while Katelyn Arens recorded six.
Bailey Hochstein had a great back row with an amazing 43 digs and 50 successful service receptions and passes.
“It was such a team effort, we played smart and hit the holes aggressively,” Buss said. “Our defense worked their tails off to touch everything they could. Just a great competitive match by both sides.”
The Lady Trojans advance to the D1 State Volleyball Tourney.
