Cardinals close out conference play by losing two matches

WALTHILL - The Randolph Lady Cardinal volleyball team played a couple of matches in the Lewis & Clark Conference Tournament this past week dropping a consolation match to Bloomfield 25-16 and 25-6 after getting beat 25-13 and 25-10 by Homer after the Lady Cardinals won in the tournament’s first round.

Bloomfield toppled Randolph in straight sets to end the Lady Cardinal’s conference tournament.

“As the season is winding down, we have gained confidence as the season has progressed,” Lilly Kuchta said. “I feel like we are ready to show how much we have improved.”

Kuchta, along with Jenna Guenther and Sydney Robinson led Randolph with three kills each against Bloomfield. Mabel Ngebeh added two.

Lexi Backhaus tipped up seven set assists while Brooke Meier had three. Ngebeh and Ella Graf each had one. Meier also had a couple of ace serves. Kuchta and Meier also contributed five digs. Delayne Thelen had four.

In the first match of the evening in the tournament, the Lady Cardinals were bounced into the consolation game by the Lady Knights.

Meier and Ngebeh led the way with three kills each. Meier also recorded seven assists.

Kuchta and Ngebeh each had an ace at the service line.

Meier paced the defensive effort with seven digs; Kuchta, Backhaus and Ngebeh had four apiece; Thelen added three.

The Lady Cardinals were set to enter postseason action in the D2-3 Sub-District Tournament on Oct. 28, meeting up against 9-22 Bancroft-Rosalie in Wynot.

The winner of that game will take on the Lady Blue Devils who have the No. 1 seed in the tournament.

“Our overall attitude is pretty good heading into the Subdistrict,” Kuchta said. “Even though our record might not show it, we have had a lot of improvement in a lot of aspects of our team such as our attitude, skill level and hustle. Even though we may have had a few curve balls thrown at us this season,we still found a way to push through and make the best of it.”

Bloomfield (14-15) defeats Randolph (3-24) 25-16, 25-6.
