WAYNE – The Wayne State College Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble concert celebrates America with music by American composers at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, in Ramsey Theatre, located in the Peterson Fine Arts Building. The performance is free and open to the public.
The concert will also be livestreamed. To view the livestream, visit www.wsc.edu/watch-live. The program is accessible by selecting the event from the Music Events list at www. wsc.edu/music.
Symphonic Band repertoire includes the majestic harmonies of “Freedom’s Light” by James Swearingen and the tranquil and imaginative “Down A Country Lane” by Aaron Copland. “Armed Forces Salute” by Bob Lowden is also featured in recognition of our military veterans. “Armed Forces Salute” is filled with hidden snippets from “America the Beautiful,” “Dixie,” Yankee Doodle,” “When Johnny Comes Marching Home,” and “Battle Hymn of the Republic.” The Symphonic Band is conducted by Michael Genslinger, instructor of music at Wayne State.
The Wind Ensemble performs the playfully patriotic “Variations on America” by Charles Ives; “Simple Gifts,” a tribute to colonial settlers, by Frank Ticheli; and “Mount Vernon Reverie,” a noble musical homage to George Washington’s hometown, by Larry MacTaggart. Also highlighted is “Summon the Heroes” by John Williams, a celebratory salute of determination and hard work written for the 1996 Summer Olympics. The Wind Ensemble is conducted by Dr. Josh Calkin, professor of music and director of bands at Wayne State.
