CLEARWATER — Laurel-Concord-Coleridge made history here Oct. 25 with a 3-1 win over Elkhorn Valley to claim the firstever volleyball tournament title for the Greater Northeast Activities Conference and improve to 27-3 on the season.
The Lady Bears made it 28-3 with a sweep over Omaha Nation in the opening match of the C1-5 SubDistrict Tournament Oct. 28 in Clarkson to advance to the finals on Oct. 29. LCC defeated Omaha Nation 25-10, 25-4 and 25-8. A complete statistical recap of the opening-round win will be in next week’s Advocate.
Against the Lady Falcons, LCC claimed its first GNAC title and its first conference volleyball title since winning the Northeast NebraskaActivities Conference (NENAC) back in 2010.
In the match, the Lady Bears lost their first set since Oct. 10, a fact which LCC coach, Julie Kvols, may have awakened her team.
“It was a good night for the girls,” Kvols said. “We hadn’t lost since we lost to Humphrey a couple of weeks ago. It was a good wake-up call.”
Laurel-Concord-Coleridge took the match with scores of 22-25, 2521, 25-16 and 25-19.
After dropping the opening set, sophomore Rena Rasmussen and senior Tali Erwin took over the match with a literal assist from Carlie Kvols.
Rasmussen recorded 22 kills on the night while Erwin added 13. Tyler Recob and Kaida Eriksen had nine each and Lainey Schutte added eight. Kvols tipped up 48 set assists.
Rasmussen completed a doubledouble with 15 digs as did Kvols who added 11 digs to her big night setting up the attack.
Eriksen recorded a teamhigh 23 digs on the night, while Schutte rounded out a solid performance with 13.
The Lady Bears were set to take on Clarkson/Leigh in the Sub-District finals on Oct. 29 with a district final lurking in the near future on Nov. 2.
The district finals will be an nounced after the SubDdistricts are completed.
