HARTINGTON — Bill Yates stood in silence as he watched over 70 years of history slowly crawl from its home at the intersection of Highway 84 and 57 to a new location a quarter-mile to the west.
It's not the first time he'd seen this storied dance hall picked up and relocated.
Yates helped Ferdie Peitz pull up the floor and disassemble the old Homewood Park Ballroom in 1952 and then haul the floor and the lumber to the south edge of Hartington to be rebuilt into the Skylon Ballroom.
This move was a lot different than the last time the ballroom was moved, though.
This move required the services of Morrow's House Movers of Jackson and Scrib's Moving of David City to haul the 150-ton, 8,000 square foot facility to its new home. The two companies worked for about three weeks to put in braces and then put wheels under the structure so it could be pulled to its new home on the eastern edge of the new Hartington Business Park.
