1924: Improvements are being planned for Lyric Theatre

A Look Back

Oct. 30, 1919

HARTINGTON — The Hartington Commercial Club went on record last Friday of being enthusiastically in favor of the proposed bridge over the Missouri River at Yankton and by a unanimous vote, authorized President Robinson to appoint a committee to solicit subscriptions to the capital stock of the bridge company.

The decision of the club to appoint the stock-soliciting committee followed the reports of Mayor Ready and H.G. Mason, President of the First National Bank.

HARTINGTON — A.L. Mengshol is having his bakery building entirely remodeled and will install a complete stock of staple and fancy groceries.

He expects to be ready for business by Saturday, Nov. 8. All partitions are being taken out and the building will be so arranged that the grocery stock will occupy the north side and the candies, ice cream, and cigars will be on the south. New shelving and cases are being added and the rooms are being entirely renovated. Gilbert O’ Mengshol, A.I. Mengshol’s uncle, will have charge of the grocery department. This will be good news to Mr. Mengshol’s old customers who have bought groceries from him for the past 20 years and were greatly grieved when he sold out his business a little over a year ago. Mr. Mengshol has received many flattering offers to take a position as a salesman both in this state and in South Dakota, but as his home and many interests are here, he decided to accept his nephew’s position and remain in Hartington.

HARTINGTON — Next Tuesday is the day when the annual meeting of the stockholders in the U.S.A. will be held all over the nation and on that date every good citizen is expected to go to the polls and cast a ballot which will help determine the kind of government we will have for the next four years.

Unless a citizen takes sufficient interest to go to the polls and vote, he should refrain from finding fault with the result.

HARTINGTON - Fine improvements for the Lyric Theatre at Hartington are being planned by R. V. Fletcher, the manager and arrangements have been practically completed to carry the plans through to completion.

Mr. Fletcher plans to put in a pressed brick front across the two lots between the News office and Dr. Dorsey’s office.

The lobby of the theatre is to be tiled. On the lot north of the present theatre it is planned to have an upto-date candy kitchen. The theatre itself will not be any wider, but will be extended considerably in length, excavation for this purpose being done now. If present plans are carried through, the Lyric will also be made the headquarters for this part of the state for first-run pictures of a famous producing company, so that the people of this community will have an opportunity to see the best pictures out even before they are shown in any other nearby Nebraska cities.

HARTINGTON - For many years, more people in the state of Nebraska have known of Hartington because of its high school football than for any other single reason.

Except for the bad year of 1922, there has not been a year since 1921 that the high school team has not had to be figured into consideration in awarding the state championship.

Apparently, this year will be no exception.

This success constitutes a type of advertising that could not be bought under any circumstances and should be duly appreciated by our people.

We have a wonderful team this year and teh fact that the team that defeated Omaha Central is coming here for the Thanksgiving Day game is quite some recognition of the general standing of the Hartington team.

The work that makes teams of the calibre of Hartington is all done day after day and night after night and all under the direction of one man. We have indeed been fortuante in having for the last three years a coach of the calibre of Coach Craig.

He has quite the credentials, having played with Peru State Normal for three years and being about the only star of the first magnitude ever produced by that institution, and later playing with the Naval Base Team at Seattle for two seasons during the war, and then becoming a student of the Master, Zupke of Illinois, has probably made him the elite of high school coaches in Nebraska.

We will probably not be able to keep him much longer as other larger schools are bidding for his services at this time. So, we must appreciate all that he has accomplished for our school and in the event that we do lose him, we can but envy the school that will be so fortunate as to get his services.

We are giving our appreciation of his services at this time because we are on the eve of two important games — the game with Neligh on Friday Nov. 7 and the game with Creighton Prep on Thanksgiving Day. The game with Neligh will settle the high school football supremecy of Northeast Nebraska and the game with Creighton Prep will go a long way in deciding the supremecy of the state. –
