Wynot racks up easy first-round playoff win

WYNOT —The Wynot Blue Devils had little trouble in their first round game of the state playoffs as they domi nated play and rolled over the visiting Palmer Tigers 44-6.

Gatlin Reimers had Palmer’s lone touchdown run. On defense Wynot gave up some yardage, but got tough inside their red zone when needed. Braylon Hans and Kotner Koch had interceptions for Wynot’s defense.

The Tiger defense was led by Taylor Kurz who had an interception and Emerson Earl had a fumble recovery for the Tigers.

It did not take long for the Blue Devils to get on the scoreboard. Lane Heimes would punch the ball in from the 2 yard line. Kotner Koch added the PAT as Wynot led 8-0 with just a minute and half gone in the game.

At the 6:00 minute mark Wynot was on the march again. A pair of first down runs by Lane Heimes got the Blue Devils offense inside the Tigers 20 yard line. Two plays later Andrew Haberman would grab a 16 yarder for the Blue Devil second score. The PAT run was stopped but Wynot’s lead stood at 14-0.

Palmer would put together a drive of their own on their next offensive set. A 16 yard catch and run by L ane Mottl and a 20 yard screen pass to Emerson Earl got the ball to the Tigers 5 yard line. Gatlin Reimers would power in from their 5 yard line for the Palmer touchdown. The PAT run was stopped but the Tigers were on the board trailing 14-6.

With just 27 seconds left in the opening quarter Lane Heimes would take an option pitch around the left side and gallop 61 yards to paydirt. Kotner Koch caught the PAT over the middle to make the score 22-6 as the first quarter came to an end.

Palmer would open the second quarter with a 3 and out on offense.

Wynot would turnover the ball on interception by the Tigers Tayar Kurz.

Palmer would put together a couple of first downs on their next offensive possession but gave the ball back on a fumble at the 17 yard line recovered by Parker Schmidt. From there Wynot got a key first down catch by Alec Sudbeck and after a holding penalty at the 3 set the ball back Andrew Haberman would sweep the right side for the 13 yard touchdown. Haberman added the PAT as Wynot’s lead had ballooned to 30-6.

The Tigers would give the ball back to the Blue Devils offense on an interception by Braylon Hans at the 33 yard line.

From there Wynot went to the Wildcat set and three straight carries by Andrew Haberman who moved the ball downfield quickly. Haberman dove in from the 3 yard line for his third score of the first half. The PAT pass was no good but Wynot was cruising 36-6.

Palmer would move the ball into Wynot territory on their next offense possession. Behind the hard running of their running back Uriel Guzman and quarter back Gatlin Reimers the Tigers found some success. A sack on third down and a pass batted down both by the Blue Devils Parker Schmidt would stall the drive as Wynot went into the final quarter leading 36-6.

Wynot would open the fourth quarter of play with their final offensive drive of night. Using the Wildcat set Andrew Haberman would carry the ball 5 straight times as Wynot would drive the ball 45 yards in 6 plays. Haberman would get his fourth score of night on a 4 yard run over the right side. Jed Nelson caught the PAT pass pushing the score to 44-6. Reserves for both teams would finish the game with no further scoring taking place.
