Wildcat duo goes up against the best in the state
KEARNEY - A pair of Hartington-Newcastle runners competed in the Class C Nebraska Cross Country Championships here Oct. 25 at the Kearney Country Club.
Senior Adam Elks ran for the Wildcats and senior, Carmen Buschkamp qualified for the girls race.
Elks ran the 5,000-meter course here in 18-minutes, 17.0-seconds, which was good enough for 73rd out of 115 runners while Buschkamp covered the distance in 21:25.7 which put her in 32nd-place out 120 runners competing.
Auburn took the team title in the girls competition, posting a score of 64, four spots better than Scotus Central Catholic with Gothenburg coming in third with 70.
Hailey O’Daniel of Arlington was the individual medalist with a time of 19:26.1, just ahead of Scotus Central Catholic’s Avery Heinrich who was second in 19:27.8.
Brenna Benjamin of Holdrege was third in 19:42.3, Scout Bell of Gothenburg was fourth in 20:03.9 and Auburn’s Liston Crotty rounded out the top five with a clocking of 20:10.5.
Holdrege was the champion in the boys race with a score of 50, Lincoln Christian was second with 69 and Gothenburg was third as the Swedes posted a score of 79.
Trevon Opp of Lincoln Christian was the individual champion, covering the course in 16:11.8, Avery Carter of Milford was the runner-up in 16:38.1, Tyler Hetz from Gothenburg was third in 16:45.2, Haven Hauxwell of Chase County was fourth and Syracuse’s Dayton Graves was fifth with a time of 16:56.5.
