Cedar sweeps Osmond to earn spot in SubDistrict finals

HARTINGTON - The Cedar Catholic Lady Trojan volleyball team grabbed a spot in the Class D1-3 Sub-District title game to be played here at the Msgr. Werner Activities Center on Oct.

29 with a three-set sweep over Osmond, 25-17, 25-10 and 25-9 on Oct. 28.

The first set with the Lady Tigers was close until Melayna McGregor got things going for the Lady Trojans with her team up 6-4.

McGregor stuffed an Osmond hitting attempt at the net then toed the service line and rifled three consecutive aces and suddenly, Cedar Catholic was up 10-4 and coach Christy Koehler was asking for a timeout.

Later in the set, Addison Walter got going for Cedar Catholic and slammed a winner down the right side and served an ace of her own to put the Lady Trojans in front 12-5.

Cedar got up 20-12 after another Walter winner and the Lady Trojans closed out the set after a Katelyn Arens kill made it 22-15.

“We spread the ball around and had lots of good hits,” Cedar Catholic coach Denae Buss said.

“Our serve receive and serving was especially going well to help us put ourselves in a good situation offensively.”

Earlier last week, the Lady Trojans were defeated by GACC 25-19, 25-13 and 25-17.

“We improved our serving from what we did in our previous match and also our serve receive,” Buss said. “We are trying to find ways to improve as a team and work on some new things to give us some versatility moving forward.”

Lauren Bernecker led a balanced attack against the Lady Bluejays with five kills, Brynn Bernecker added four and Anisten Wortmann, Melayna McGregor and Addison Walter each hit three.

Bailey Hochstein played a great back row with 15 digs and 30 quality passes.

Lyndsey Hamilton and McGregor tipped up 10 and 9 set assists respectively.

Hochstein, Lauren Bernecker and Hamilton each had a couple of aces serves, McGregor tacked on one ace.

The winner for the Cedar Catholic and Hartington-Newcastle match will move on to a district game on Nov. 2 Cedar Catholic (12-18) def Osmond (11-15) 25-17, 25-10, 25-9.
