Cardinals drop season finale

RANDOLPH – Randolph dropped its season finale here on Oct. 17, 34-8 to the Winside Wildcats to end the season 1-7. The Wildcats improved to 4-4.

Winside scored first when Korbin Carlson, who finished the night with three touchdowns, crossed the goal line from the 14 then ran in the conversion to put the Wildcats up 8-0.

The Cardinals answered when Milo Rayford rumbled in from eight yards out then Kaden Thorell grabbed a Dayton Winkelbauer pass for the 2-point conversion and the game was tied, 8-8.

The Wildcats took the lead in the second 12 minutes on a 1-yard plunge and added the conversion again to go up 16-8.

Winside managed a safety in the third quarter to increase the advantage to 18-8 then put the game away in the final frame with a pair of Carson runs to pay dirt and the 34-8 final score was set.

Rayford paced the Randolph offense with 65 yards on his 20 carries including the lone Cardinal score.

Winkelbauer completed three passes for 20 yards and the extra point pass to Thorell.

Gavin Wortman led the defensive effort for the Cards with 14 tackles including five solo stops. Joe Gonzalez had nine tackles, Engel added eight and Cole Jensen had six.

Eli Bermel had five tackles and recovered a Wildcat fumble. Winside will move on to the D2 Football Playoffs with a trip to play 6-2 Riverside on Oct. 24.
