1959: Ford Motor Company honors Gildersleeve

HARTINGTON — Members of Cedar county’s 4-H soil judging team turned in very good performances at the state contest in West Point Tuesday.

Gary Lentz of Coleridge placed third in the 4-H individual division.

The county team composed of Gary and John and Mary Fleming and Merle Arens Hartington took third in the team competition. Mary Jo tied for 10th in individual judging.

HARTINGTON — Ted Gildersleeve, salesman for Miller Motor Co., won the “salesman of the month award” for September in the Omaha district of the Ford Motor Co He received a car compass as a prize and he and Mrs. Gildersleeve were honored by Ford at a dinner at the Wagon Wheel Café in Laurel.

HARTINGTON — Directing Sammy Kaye’s famous “Swing and Sway” band for one number was a thrilling experience for LaVonne Schrempp, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Schrempp of Hartington, last Sunday night at the King’s Ballroom in Norfolk.

Miss Schrempp was awarded first place among four contestants who were called upon. The contestant was given a baton, then had to give the downbeat and set the tempo for the band.

As a prize, Miss Schrempp received complimentary pass from King’s Ballroom and an autographed baton from Sammy Kaye.

HARTINGTON — The water level of the Missouri River below Gavins Point dam will be lowered starting at 12:01 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 31, the Corps of Engineers announced.

Releases from the dam will be decreased from 1,000 to 3,000 CFS per day; reaching a discharge of 10,000 CFS by Nov. 5.

HARTINGTON — Friends and neighbors gathered at the Cyril Becker farm with two elevators last Thursday afternoon and harvested about seventy acres of corn. Mr. Becker has been unable to work.

Those assisting were Ralph Albers, Roman Albers, Daniel Eickhoff, Frank Eickhoff, Harold Eickhoff, Edwin Heimes, Ado Koch, Cletus Koch, Gerhard Lammers, Edward Lange, Edward Schrempp, Richard Schulte, Albert Stratman and Armond Wiebelhaus.

Mrs. Cletus Koch and Mrs. Hubert Schrempp assisted with the lunch.
