The Wynot Blue Devils knocked the Bancroft Rosalie Panthers from the ranks of the undefeated Friday when they earned a big 54-28 win on their home field.
The game featured everything from long passing plays on offense to goal line stands on defense.
Wynot took control in the second half out scoring the Panthers 28-12 after intermission to complete the upset and run their record to 6-2 on the season. Bancroft fell to 7-1.
Lane Heimes and Andrew Haberman led the offense for the Blue Devils with 4 and 3 touchdowns respectively.
On defense Nixson Heimes had a pair of interceptions and a fumble recovery while Killian Steinhaus and Kotner Koch each had 11 tackles to anchor that side of the ball.
For the Panthers Braxton Bonneau and Braylon Wegner each had long touchdown catches.
Ayden Dolezal had a solid defensive showing with 14 tackles and Grayson Briggs had 11 stops on the night.
The game started out competitive as both defenses were on display early. At the 4:00 minute mark Wynot would get on the scoreboard first. Set up by a key 15 yard catch in heavy traffic by Kotner Koch, the Blue Devils’ Lane Heimes, finished the drive with a 7 yard reception from Devin Brummer for the opening score. Killian Steinhaus grabbed the PAT as Wynot had a 8-0 lead.
The Panthers would answer quickly on a 68 yard bomb to Braylon Wegner. Nicholas Buchholz ran in the PAT and the score was tied 8-8 at the end of one quarter.
Wynot would go on the march at the 8:00 minute mark of the second period. Andrew Haberman’s 25 yard catch and run set up a 5 yard option run right by Lane Heimes. The PAT run was stopped and Wynot’s lead went to 14-8.
The Blue Devils defense held and they would strike quickly on offense. Killian Steinhaus would find a seam up the middle as Devin Brummer hit him on a 51 yard scoring strike. The PAT pass was no good as Wynot’s lead had grown to 20 to 8.
Wynot’s offense continued to click on their next offense set. Another key 15 yard catch by Killian Steinhaus kept the drive alive. Lane Heimes would weave his way in from 12 yards for another Blue Devil score. PAT scoring continued to be tough for Wynot but they held the 26-8 advantage.
In the final minutes of the half Bancroft Rosalie would narrow the lead when Nicolas Buchholz connected with Braxton Bonneau on a deep cross for a 42 yard catch and run. Grayson Briggs punched it in from the 2 yard line. Nick Bucholz ran in the PAT to make the halftime score 26-16 in favor of the Blue Devils.
The Panthers would rally early in the third quarter. Braxton Bonneau would snare a pass over the middle and weave his way 38 yards. The catch set up a 1 yard dive by Braxton Briggs. The PAT failed but the game was getting interesting as the Panthers cut the Devils’ lead to 26-22 early in the third quarter.
Wynot’s offense continued to find success on their next drive. First down catches of 15 yards by Lane Heimes and 29 yards by Andrew Haberman kept the Blue Devils rolling. Haberman would cap the drive on a 4 yard touchdown run. The PAT run was stopped but Wynot’s lead had grown to 32-22.
Bancroft Rosalie would answer on their turn on offense. Braxton Bonneau made a tough catch in traffic and 35 yards later he was in the Devils red zone. Nick Bucholz finished the drive on a 9 yard touchdown run. The PAT was no good as the Panthers had cut into the Devils lead trailing 32-28.
Wynot’s offense continued to have an answer. Lane Heimes bolted 38 yards to paydirt on the Blue Devils next offensive set. Heimes ran in the PAT as well as the home team took a 40-28 lead going into the final quarter.
The Blue Devils defense would own the fourth quarter while their offense continued to have success. A Nixson Heimes interception would give Wynot a short field. Aided by back to back 15 yard penalties Wynot moved deep into Panther territory. Haberman would cap the drive on a 4 yard touchdown run. Haberman added the PAT run to make the score 48-28.
Bancroft Rosalie would mount a drive deep into Wynot ‘s red zone but it was stopped by another Nixson Heimes interception at the their 3 yard line. Andrew Haberman would pick up his 3rd touchdown of night on a 71 yard gallop down the left sideline. The PAT was stopped but Wynot had pulled away to a 54-28 lead.
Bancroft Rosalie’s offense would put together one last drive but the Blue Devil defensive unit stiffened and got the stop at the one yard line. Reserves ran out the clock to give Wynot the 54-28 upset win.
Wynot is the third seed in the East and will host Palmer Thursday in the first round of the state playoffs.
