Hartington-Newcastle was down Jaden Opfer before the race as she injured her ankle during practice and Claire Rolfes, one of the Lady Wildcat top runners when down with about 400 meters left in the district race.
“This is definitely not how I wanted to finish the season but I am so proud of our girls,” HNS coach Lisa Rolfes said. “They each made incredible gains through the season and they made it a joy to come to practice.”
Boone Central won the girls’ team title with 44 points, Pierce was second with 48 and Columbus Lakeview gathered the final team slot in Kearney with 56 points.
Boone Central’s Autumn Gasper won the individuals title. The Lady Cardinal freshman covered the 5,000 meter course in 20:52.70 over a minute in front of runner-up Zoey Ebmeier of Pierce who crossed the mat in 21:56.20.
Buschkamp recorded a 22:02.80 to get her seat in the van heading south to Kearney.
“We’re very excited that even with the wind, Carmen was able to have a great day at districts and earn a bid to state,” said Rolfes. “We’re looking forward to cheering her on this week.”
