Lady Wildcats drop two in triangular

HARTINGTON - Hartington- Newcastle dropped a pair of volleyball matches in a triangular here Oct. 15. The Lady Wildcats lost to Tri County Northeast 25-20 and 25-15 after dropping the opening match with Winside 25-19 and 25-17.

In the loss to the Wolfpack, McKenzie and Karissa Bruning provided the bulk of the offense with six and five kills respectively. Maddie Steffen added four and Vayda Lippert contributed three.

Lippert had 12 set assists and Hazel Hochstein tipped up seven while Abi Rice had six digs and had 15 quality returns and passes.

The loss to Winside was a tough pill to swallow for Hartington- Newcastle and coach Sarah Edwards.

HNS had just defeated the other Lady Wildcats three days prior to the triangular in Hartington-Newcastle’s tournament on Oct. 12.

“The loss to Winside was a very disappointing loss,” Edwards said. “We need to get back in the gym and work on error correction and progression to get ready for the conference tournament and the rest of the season.”

McKenzie Bruning again led the Lady Wildcat attack with eight winners in the match. Maddie Steffen had six kills and Ella Eickhoff added four.

Lippert had 12 assists and McKenzie and Karissa Bruning each had a couple of ace serves.

The Lady Wildcats were set to enter the Greater Northeast Activities Conference Tournament against Summerland on Oct. 21. The tournament continues Oct. 22 with consolation games and the semifinals with the finals and a third-place match set for Oct. 25 at Summerland High School.
