Even matchups leads to close losses for Cardinals

RANDOLPH - The Randolph Lady Cardinal volleyball team dropped a home match with Bloomfield on Oct. 10 then dropped three matches in a quadrangular held at Bancroft-Rosalie on Oct. 12 to Plainview, Stanton and Bancroft-Rosalie.

The Lady Cardinals opened with Plainview in the B-R quadrangular with the Lady Pirates coming out on top, 25-15 and 25-13.

Sydney Robinson had four digs and Backhaus dug up three attempted winners.

The Lady Cardinals lost to Stanton in the second match of the day 25-8 and 25-15.

“Stanton was by far hardest hitting we’ve played this year,” Coach, Lyndsee English said. “It was nice to see our girls put up a stronger fight in the second set after getting beat bad in the first set. To me that shows that we have some competitive fight in us and we are able to adjust and make corrections.”

Kuchta and Jenna Guenther each had a couple of kills, Backhaus had two ace serves and a pair of set assists and four digs.

Ngebeh also had four digs and Robinson had a couple of stuffs at the net.

The Lady Cardinals dropped the final match in a tight battle with the Lady Panthers, 25-23 and 25-21.

“The match with Bancroft-Rosalie was an even match up all the way across the board. Both sets were back and forth,” English said. “This should have been a win for us but unfortunately we just didn’t finish. The girls played really well and I was super proud of how they played in this match. They were more like the team that we are familiar with in practice.”

Ngebeh was again a force at the net with six kills in the match, Kuchta added four, Greiner and Robinson had two winners each.

Backhaus tipped up nine assists and Meier registered six.

Randolph opened the week back on Oct. 10 with a home match against Bloomfield, which went to the Lady Bees, 25-21, 25-15 and 25-20.

The Lady Cardinals were cruising along with a lead in the first set 2119, when Bloomfield took a timeout.

“They took a timeout after one of their players recorded her 2,000th set assist and after that timeout our players lost all of our momentum and ended up losing,” English said. “We put up a good fight in the third set but in the end it just wasn’t enough.”

Greiner led the attack with five kills, Robinson and Jenna Guenther each hit three winners.

Backhaus served three aces, Ngebeh and Meier each had two.

Meier registered 11 set assists while Backhaus tipped up eight.

Greiner had three stuffs at the net defensively; Guenther had a couple of blocks. Robinson hit double digits with 10 digs, Meier and Ngebeh each had eight digs.
