LCC golfers punch their ticket to State golf tourney

WAYNE - The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge golf team was not going to leave any stone unturned, anything to chance, whatever adage you would like to apply here, when it came to the District C-3 Golf Tournament here at Wayne Country Club Oct. 8.

Considering the Lady Bears missed a trip to last season’s state meet by just six strokes, this edition of Laurel-Concord-Coleridge golf was not to be denied a spot in next week’s state tournament, coming in second to Wayne, the pre-tournament favorite, with a team score of 398.

The Lady Blue Devils won the team title with 378 strokes and LCC was five shots in front of thirdplace West Holt, which also qualified for state.

“We decided we weren’t going to let last year happen again, we have focused on this all year,” Lady Bears coach Christina Patefield said. “We have been in the top two in most of the tournaments we were in this year, so I told the girls before we started, just play your game and we’’ll make it. They did and we did.”

Laurel-Concord-Coleridge ended up with three girls who would have qualified as an individual with three securing top 10 medals as the top three teams and top 10 individuals and ties move along to state.

The top LCC finisher was Harper Bruning, who came in fifth after carding a 95.

“I’m really excited to get to state with my team and have a good time with our seniors for one more time,” Bruning said. “We worked really hard to get to where we are and now we get to play together one more time.”

Daleni Knust of West Holt was the medalist, winning the individual gold after firing an 84. Runnerup, Joslyn Johnson of Wayne shot an 88, teammate Carli Carnham was third at 90 and Pierce’s Rylee Altwine was fourth with a 91.

Holly Patefield was right behind her teammate, Bruning, shooting a 97 while Clara Brummels was 10th with an 18-hole total of 98, after a scorecard playoff. Her 98 tied her for the six-best score of the day.

Skylar Swanson rounded out the LCC scoring with 108 which put her in the top 20 at 19th and Danica Gould was 33rd for the Lady Bears with a 116.

The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge golf team will travel to North Platte for the Class C Nebraska High School Girls Golf Championships on Oct. 14 and 15 at Lake Maloney Golf Club.

“This team has been great all season long, golf is an individual sport, but we have a team,” Patefield said. “When one of us comes out and has a bad day, there is other girls that comes to the top and helps us out. We don’t have one star player, we have five solid players.”
