1919: End of Daylight law will end confusion here

Oct. 23, 1919

HARTINGTON — Sen. Chs. H. Randall, Wm. Stagemen and L.H. Bruner of Randolph spent several hours in Hartington Wednesday conferring with F.O. Robinson, County Chairman of the organized movement for the erection of a permanent memorial to Theodore Roosevelt at a cost of $500,000.

The funds will be raised by membership in the memorial association.

FORDYCE — Frank Meirose has remodeled the big lumber yard building at Fordyce into an amusement hall and will have a big opening dance there next Wednesday evening with Yankton music.

Mr. Meirose is also planning on having moving picture show exhibits at the new Fordyce facility.

HARTINGTON — The folks who recall that the semi-annual change in time in this country takes place early next Sunday morning and who turn back their clocks one hour when they retire will be able to enjoy an extra hour’s sleep without any danger of being late at church Sunday morning.

The hands of the clocks were moved forward an hour on March 19, 1918, and resumed their ordinary position last October.

Last spring they were again moved forward and will now be returned to their original positions. Owing to the repeal of the daylight law by Congress, there will be no changes next year.

Depot agents along the local branch have been advised to turn the hands of their clocks back one hour when they leave the stations on Saturday evening, so that they will be running correctly Sunday morning.

The actual changing of the clocks is ordered for 2 o’clock Sunday morning when the hands will be moved back to 1 o’clock.

Trains then on the road will have to lay over at the first telegraph station where the trainmen will set their watches back and the train will simply have to wait until an hour elapses.

Those trains due to start their trips about midnight will be held an hour so they will be due to arrive at their scheduled time. Much of the confusion in the smaller communities caused by the failure to observe the changes will be at an end with the return to the old standard time.
