1954: Peters sells the Chief Bar to Miller

HARTINGTON — Sale of the Chief Bar in Hartington by Chet Peters to Kenneth L. Miller was officially announced this week. Mr. Miller will take ownership of the business next week.

M. Kenneth Miller, who is serving his second term as Mayor of Hartington, has been active in community affairs for several years.

Peters, who operated a restaurant here and a locker plant at Crofton prior to buying the Chief Bar three years ago, is returning to Sioux City where he lived prior to moving to Hartington. He has purchased a bar in South Sioux City and will later open a restaurant in conjunction with it.

Oct. 28, 1954

HARTINGTON — The founder and two present owners of Hegert Hardware will be on hand this week for a grand opening to show off their completely remodeled store.

R.F. Hegert first started in the hardware business in Hartington in 1912.

His two sons, Byron and Ray, now own and operate the store. R.F. Hegert retired and sold the business to his sons in 1949.

Oct. 28, 1954

HARTINGTON — The Auto Hospital, owned and operated by Jack Samelson, has moved into a new building south of the Wiechelman Repair Shop.

The fireproof building is 50 x 100 feet and contains 5,000 square feet of floor space.

Oct. 22, 1959

HARTINGTON — Plans for the Hartington Chamber of Commerce Halloween party and dance for the youngsters of the community were announced this week.

The Halloween party will be held Saturday. Oct. 31. A king and queen, selected from Hartington’s two high schools, will be crowned at the dance in the city auditorium for the high school students. The dance will start at 9 o’clock.

There will be treats and noisemakers at the dance. For the children of grade school age and under there will be free movies and treats at the Lyric Theatre starting at 7 o’clock.

The Halloween party and dance is sponsored by the Hartington youngsters with the understanding that they will not go about the city on trick-or-treat campaigns.

In the past the youngsters have been very good about keeping their part of the bargain.
