OK voters, now it’s time to start on your homework

Editorial

I’m tired of the crazy politics, the conspiracy theories and the endless promises.

Even though the election is still three weeks away, we’ve all heard and seen just about enough already.

The mud slinging, the nasty comments, the exagerations and the outright lies are all getting very, very tiresome.

That’s why I’m going to sit down and fill out my official ballot this week — just as soon as it arrives in the mail. I want to be able to, in good conscience, turn off the next ad that pops up on to my TV screen without fear that I’m missing a very important message. Too late folks, I’ve already voted.

Before I cast my vote, though, I’m going to sit down and do my homework.

We all have a responsibility to do our homework before casting our ballots. The first, and easiest way to start your research, is to read the legal notices, both in last week’s and in this week’s Cedar County News.

The sample ballots were published in last week’s newspapers. An explanation of the proposed Ballot Measures are being published in this week’s Cedar County News. You will be able to see how they will look and read the actual language as it will appear on the ballot you will receive in the mail.

We urge our readers to take some time with these special pages so they can better understand what and who they are voting for or against.

There are plenty of folks out there saying one thing about a certain issue, while the opposite is actully true.

Don’t be fooled by the misinformation.

Yes, voters are being overwhelmed by information — and more importantly — misinformation from all sides. But the more we know about the issues on which we are voting, the better our chances of making good decisions come election day.

Voting is one of the simplest and most important things we as Americans can do to participate in the electoral process.

Oh sure, after months and months of negative ads about this candidate or that issue, it’s easy to get turned off about the election and choose to sit this one out.

But remember, our right to vote has not come without a cost. American soldiers have given up their lives for it. Is it asking too much for you to take a few minutes out of your day to honor their sacrifice and fill out and return your ballot?
