Political service is an admirable profession, and we in Cedar County and the great state of Nebraska are fortunate to have strong, admirable people willing to throw their hats into the political ring.
Unfortunately, Nebraska and Cedar County have seen their share of ugly political races.
It is the newspaper’s responsibility to make sure everyone’s opinions are heard and understood, but to also be fair and objective to all of the candidates and issues.
We’re bringing all of this up now because, believe it or not, the general election is only three weeks away.
That means the Cedar County News’ Letters to the Editor policy must once again undergo a bit of refinement.
As it states in our usual Letters to the Editor policy, the newspaper is meant to be a voice for public comment — a chance for our readers to share their thoughts and opinions.
The policy also states all letters must be no longer than 400 words, and all letters must be signed. We also ask that the writer provide a phone number (which will not be published) so we can verify they actually wrote the letter.
It pains us to have to modify that policy this time of year.
Because we are a weekly publication, we have to place some time limits on publishing letters.
The final deadline to receive letters is noon, Monday, Oct. 21 because the last regular letter will be printed Oct. 23.
If one of these letters requires a rebuttal, readers can write a rebuttal letter challenging the facts of a previous letter to be published Oct. 30. No new letters to the editor will be published that week, since the opposing candidates or supporters of an issue would not have the time to respond to any issues raised in such a letter.
