HARTINGTON — Cole Heimes had a career night as he led the Hartington-Newcastle football team around, through and over the Boyd County Spartans here Friday, pacing his team to a 50-22 win to improve to 6-1 on the season.
If Heimes took Saturday off, no one would blame him.
He carried the ball 34 times for 255 yards and six touchdowns. He threw the ball 14 times, completing eight for another 94 yards and another touchdown. He returned kicks and punts for another 60 yards and was in on 13 tackles including eight solo stops. He also had two tackles behind the line of scrimmage and intercepted a Spartan pass. Rumor has it he drove the Hartington bus back to the school.
He opened the game with his first touchdown a little under midway through the first quarter on a 2-yard dive then ran in the conversion to put HNS up 8-0.
Boyd County tied it up early in the second but three consecutive Heimes scores gave the Wildcats some cushion.
Touchdown jaunts of 25, 3 and 13 put the lead up to 28-8 as the teams went to their respective halftime huddles.
The Spartans answered to open the second half, but Heimes got his brother Jason involved and tossed him a 56-yard touchdown pass and with 5:53 left in the third, the lead was back up to 36-14.
Cole Heimes would score again from the 5 and sandwiched his sixth touchdown around a Boyd County score and the final score was set at 50-22.
Defensively, the Wildcats used a bend but don’t break approach as the Spartans did gain some yards and there was much more than Heimes on that side of the ball for Hartington-Newcastle.
Aiden Collier had seven unassisted tackles and two assists, Ashton Wakeley had eight total tackles and a tackle behind the line, Cole Rosener had an interception and Wakeley recovered a fumble.
The Wildcats will complete their regular season on the road when they will travel to Bloomfield to take on the 4-3 Bees Thursday.
