WINSIDE — The Wynot Blue Devils travelled to Winside on Friday night and came away with a 28-0 shutout win.
Wynot‘s defense showed up in this one, giving up some yardage between the 20s but seemed to stiffen to hold the Wildcats out of the end zone all night.
Wynot was without their starting quarterback Devin Brummer due to injury so Andrew Haberman stepped in and had a solid night scoring three rushing touchdowns and passing for a third. Killian Steinhaus had five receptions to keep several drives alive.
Winside’s offense was held to just 92 yards of total offense.
On defense Wynot’s entire team played well led by Killian Stienhaus and Jed Nelson with 9 and 8 tackles respectively.
Winside defense got 14 tackles from Aden Sellin and a fumble recovery by Mace MaGwire.
“The two teams played hard. We had a few too many turnovers but the defense played well and the kids came out with the win,” said Wynot head coach Steve Heimes.
After several exchanges of punts the Blue Devils found some offense. Wynot mounted a drive that was aided by a facemask call on the Wildcats. Andrew Haberman would run a quarterback draw up the middle from 34 yards out for the opening score of game. The PAT run was stopped and Wynot led 6-0 at the end of one period.
The second quarter saw a back and forth affair. Wynot would mount a drive late. Andrew Haberman would connect with Killian Steinhaus on a 22 yard completion. Haberman would cap the drive on a 1 yard push for the score. The PAT was no good making it 12-0.
Winside tried to answer with a couple of first downs and a 22 yard catch and run by Mace MaGwire. A bad snap over the quarterbacks head stalled the drive as the Blue Devils took the 12-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Defense would continue to be the key early in the third quarter. Wynot was able to keep a drive alive when a roughing the punter call on fourth down kept their drive going. Andrew Haberman would connect with Killian Steinhaus on a 17 yard scoring strike at the mid- point of the quarter. Haberman ran in the keeper for the PAT as Wynot’s lead had grown to 20-0.
Wynot put up one more score after a strip sack by Parker Schmidt gave them the ball at the 11 yard line. Wynot would capitalize on the turnover when on a quarterback run Andrew Haberman fumbled the ball at the 6 yard line but recovered it in the endzone for another Blue Devil score. Haberman and Steinhaus connected for the PAT to push Wynot’s advantage to 28-0.
Reserves mopped up for most of the final quarter with no further scoring.
Wynot hosts Bancroft-Rosalie next Friday.
