HARTINGTON — Hartington-Newcastle swept a couple of matches in its own tournament here on Oct. 12. The Lady Wildcats took care of Bloomfield and Winside in straight sets and ran into the sizzling Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Lady Bears to take third place in the tournament.
In the consolation game of the eight-team tournament, the Lady Wildcats defeated Winside 25-19 and 25-17.
“We showed we could bounce back from a tough loss,” HNS coach Sarah Edwards said. “We cleaned up our hitting errors and were very positive in our progression of the day.”
McKenzie Bruning led the Hartington-Newcastle attack with eight winners in the match, Maddie Steffen added six.
Vayda Lippert registered 12 set assists, Hazel Hochstein tipped up four.
Abi Rice bumped up nine quality passes. The Lady Bears set the tone in the first set and Hartington- Newcastle just couldn’t stay with their neighbors to the south.
“We started the first set strong but we were plagued by too many hitting errors to continue to be competitive,” Edwards said. “Our defense was strong but our offense will need to continue to be a team goal. We’ll work on it.”
McKenzie Bruning again paced the offense with six winners, Lippert added four and Steffen recorded three.
Rice had a solid back row with nine digs and 15 solid passes.
The Lady Wildcats opened the tournament with a win over Bloomfield 25-21 and 25-20.
Lippert had 10 assists and four kills while Hochstein added eight set ups.
McKenzie Bruning and Karissa Bruning had nine and three kills respectively, Steffen had three.
The Lady Wildcats were set to host a triangular on Oct. 15 with Tri County Northeast and Winside before embarking into the Greater Northeast Activities Conference Tournament on Oct. 21.
