Cedar cruises to 49-14 win over Ponca

PONCA - Cedar Catholic hit the road Oct. 11 to take on Ponca in C2-3 District action here and came away with a decisive 49-14 win over the Indians to improve to 6-1 on the season with a couple of games left on the regular season slate.

Braeden Reifenrath had three rushing touchdowns on the night and the Trojan offense amassed over 400 yards on the ground on the way to the win.

“I thought our kids showed up ready to play from the beginning of the game,” Cedar Catholic coach Chad Cattau said. “We have stressed being consistent and showing steady improvement and for the most part I believe we have done that.”

After a holding call on the first play from scrimmage was called against the Trojans, they settled in and drove for a score.

Micah Cattau got the party started with a 30 yard dash for a touchdown with 9:45 left in the first 12 minutes and the rout was on.

Bodie Hochstein kicked the extra point and the Trojans were up 7-0.

Reifenrath then scored his first touchdown from 15 yards out and another from 72 yards away and with two Hochstein kicks Cedar Catholic was up 21-0 with over two minutes left in the first quarter.

“We were able to control the line of scrimmage early which allowed us to build a lead right away,” the coach said. “I thought our line played a great game on both sides of the ball.”

The second quarter was much of the same with Breiton Whitmire finding pay dirt from five yards out to make it 28-0 then Reifenrath found the end zone again before the halftime break to open the continuous clock in the second half.

Ponca did get in the end zone in the third period but the Trojans answered with a Whitmire run to get the clock running again.

Easton Hochstein cashed in from the eight in the final quarter to make it 49-6 then the Indians scored a cosmetic touchdown late to get to the final score.

Brady Hochstein paced the Cedar Catholic defense with 10 tackles including five solo stops and one tackle behind the line of scrimmage.

Micah Cattau had seven stops, Jaymison Cattau had five with on tackle for a loss and Matthew Loecker, Hunter Kuchta and Ryan Pick all tackled Ponca runners behind the line.

The Trojans will remain on the road for another week when they travel to Oakland to take on the 5-2 Oakland-Craig Knights in another C2-3 contest.

“As long as we work to get better every day, good things will happen for us,” said Cattau. “We have to continue to be focused on daily improvements and stay motivated to get better all the time.”
