Wildcat runners claim GNAC title

PLAINVIEW - The first-ever Greater Northeast Activities Conference title was up for grabs and the Hartington- Newcastle Wildcat cross country team decided to take it here at the Plainview Country Club on Oct. 10.

The Wildcats outdistanced runner up Laurel-Concord- Coleridge to bring home the first-place plaque, 12-18.

The Lady Wildcats ended up in a tie for third with Elkhorn Valley with 25 points each. West Holt was the girls champion with 21 with Laurel-Concord-Coleridge second with 23 in a tightly contested race for the top four spots.

Elkhorn Valley was third in the boys division with 32 points.

The Elks brothers were the top Wildcat finishers with Adam taking third with a time of 18-minutes, 56.76-seconds, Alex was fourth in 19:16.37.

Isaac Hernandez-Santiago was right behind the brothers, coming in fifth in 19:31.48 to account for all of the HNS scoring.

Aaron Wortmann was 13th, Aidan Anderson was 16th and Braeden Kleinschmit came in 23rd.

Drew Martin was the boys’ conference champion, hitting the mat in 17:58.83 after 5,000 meters, LCC’s Preston Rose was second in 18:43.88.

Carmen Buschkamp and Claire Rolfes paced the Lady Wildcats.

Buschkamp came in fourth with a time of 22:06.48 while Rolfes was fifth in 22:39.53.

Ryell Haug came in 20th, Isabel Rolfes was 25th and Jaden Opfer was 28th.

Mazzy Kuchar of Elkhorn Valley was the individual champion in 20:52.94 with Callie Fischer of Lutheran High Northeast taking the runner-up honors with a time of 21:03.26.

The Wildcats and Lady Wildcats will move on to the C-3 District Cross Country Meet on Oct. 17 at the Albion Country Club just outside of Albion.
