Second-half surge can’t lift Bears past Plainview

LAUREL - Laurel-Concord-Coleridge dropped its fourth game in five starts this fall with a 55-34 loss to Plainview Friday.

The Bears warmed up in the second half, getting the first two touchdowns of the third quarter, but the Pirates already held a 34-0 advantage at the intermission and extended the lead to 48-12 before LCC answered late in the third frame.

In fact, Laurel-Concord-Coleridge out scored Plainview 34-21 in the second half.

After the Pirates sprinted to the first-half lead, the Bears got busy trying to get back in the game.

Caleb Erwin hauled in a 20-yard pass from Connor Korth to make it 34-6 in the third quarter then Korth ran it in from 17 yards out to make it 34-12.

Plainview answered with a couple of scoring runs, but LCC got right back to work and by the end of the third, Erwin and Korth hooked up again, this time from 40 yards out and the teams went to the final 12 minutes with the Pirates up, 48-18.

Korth took it in from the eight to open the fourth then ran in the twopoint try to make it 48-26.

Korth then tossed his third touchdown pass of the evening to Ryder Jelinek, who scored from the 18 and after an Eli Haisch conversion run, the Bears had crawled back to within 14, 48-34.

The comeback stopped there and the Pirates would add a cosmetic touchdown on a short pass and a point after kick was good, the final score was set.

Korth had a whale of a game, completing 14-of-31 passes for 195 yards and the three TD’s, rushed for 104 yards on 26 carries and scored twice and had 18 tackles and an interception on the other side of the ball. Half of his tackles were solo stops.

Tanner Thompson had 10 solo tackles and 14 overall, Haisch had 13 tackles and Puppe and Jelinek each had nine.

Erwin joined Korth with an interception while Jelinek tackled two Pirates behind the line of scrimmage, Cade Johnson and Kolten Settje each had one tackle for loss.

Haisch, Johnson and Jelinek each recorded one sack.

The Bears will get back on the horse Oct. 11 when they travel to take on 5-1 Summerland on the road.
