Lady Bears power past state-rated Pierce

LAUREL - The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Lady Bears added three wins to improve to 19-2 as the 2024 season winds down.

The Lady Bears had a very busy and successful week defeating 13-9 Summerland on the road 25-17, 18-25, 25-21 and 25-14 on Oct. 5, swept Creighton on Oct. 3 25-14, 25-5 and 25-5 and avenged a loss to highly-rated Pierce on Oct. 1 with a 25-23, 20-25, 25-23 and 25-22 win over the Lady Bluejays in Pierce.

Against Summerland, LCC split the first two sets with the Lady Bobcats then went back-to-back in sets three and four to win the match.

Rena Rasmussen had a great night attacking with 19 kills. Tali Erwin added 11, Kaida Eriksen had seven and Lainey Schutte tacked on five.

Carlie Kvols did a fine job setting up the attack with 40 set assists, Eriksen had 20 solid passes, Rasmussen had 13, Bailey Graf had 12, Erwin had 10 and Schutte nine.

Defensively, Rasmussen had three stuffs at the net, Kvols had a couple and Schutte and Tyler Recob each had one block.

Schutte added 18 digs to her solid night on the court and Eriksen contributed 16.

Against the Lady Bulldogs, Laurel-Concord-Coleridge had little trouble in the sweep winning the last two sets 25-5 each.

Rasmussen again led a balanced attack with 15 kills and recorded a double-double with 12 digs.

Erwin had eight good swings, Eriksen six, Schutte and Recob had five each.

Kvols tipped up 35 assists.

The match with Pierce was a back-and-forth affair, with the Lady Bears gutting out the four-set match that was close from start to finish.

Another balanced night at the net and a good night at the service line made the difference.

Kvols distributed 35 assists with Rasmussen ending with 15 winners, Eriksen had a dozen and Erwin and Schutte recorded seven each.

Rasmussen had three ace serves, Recob added a couple, Schutte, Erwin and Eriksen each had one ace.

Erwin had 18 quality passes, Schutte had 16, Rasmussen 15 and Graf had 10.

The Lady Bears are set to take on Howells-Dodge and Humphrey/ Lindsay in a triangular at Humphrey/ Lindsay on Oct. 10 before playing in the annual Hartington-Newcastle Tournament this Saturday.

LCC will entertain Cedar Catholic on Oct. 15.
