Runners compete in large Battle Creek meet

BATTLE CREEK – The Randolph quartet of Kamdin Worlein, Brecken Shearer, Brayden Worlein and Emily Gilliland ran in the Battle Creek Invitational at Evergreen Golf Course near here on Oct. 4.

Battle Creek won the boys’ division of the race with 18 points. Norfolk Catholic was second with 39 and Homer was third with 42.

The Braves’ Miles Clausen was the top boys finisher, running the 5,000-meter course in 17-minutes, 16.93 seconds while Andrew Kastl of Norfolk Catholic was second at 17:51.73.

Kamdin Worlein and Shearer came in 62nd and 65th respectively for the Cardinals with Brayden Worlein coming in 68th in 26:38.19 Kamdin Worlein finished in 24:20.70 and Shearer used a time of 24:52.06 for his position. All three Cardinals shaved seconds off of their season’s bests.

Homer was the girls’ team champion with a total of 25. Wisner-Pilger was second with 43 and Hartington-Newcastle was third just five points behind then Lady Gators.

Lily Harris of Homer was the medalist covering the 5k in 20:30.86, teammate Jaedyn Bousquet used a 21:46.36 clocking to take second. Claire Rolfes of Hartington-Newcastle was third in 21:53.56 while NovaLee Makelin of Battle Creek was fourth in 21:55.34.

Gilliland continues to improve in her freshman season, using a time of 23:39.85 to place in the top 20 at 18th, surpassing her time in the previous meet by more than a minute.

Randolph cross country is inching into the tail end of its season with the Lewis & Clark Conference meet scheduled for Rolling Hills Country Club near Bloomfield Oct. 11 before competing in the D-2 District Cross Country meet at Twin Creeks Golf Course north of Pender on Oct. 17.

The Nebraska Class D Cross Country Championships are set for Oct. 25 at the Kearney Country Club in Kearney.
