‘Cats earn thirdplace honors at Battle Creek

BATTLE CREEK - Claire Rolfes and Carmen Buschkamp led the Lady Wildcat cross country team to a thirdplace finish in the Battle Creek Invitational cross country meet held near here at Evergreen Golf Course Oct. 4.

Rolfes placed third while Buschkamp came in seventh to pace Hartington-Newcastle to 48 team points, five spots behind runner-up, Wisner-Pilger.

Homer won the girls’ title with 25 points.

The Wildcats placed fourth as a team with 68 points. Battle Creek won the boys title with 18, Norfolk Catholic was second with 39 and Homer came in fourth with 42.

Adam Elks paced Hartington- Newcastle with a 10th-place effort as the Wildcats had three runners in the top 20.

Lily Harris of Homer won the gold in the girls race, finishing with a time of 20-minutes, 30.86-seconds, teammate Jaedyn Bousquet was second in 21:46.36.

Rolfes was next in 21:53.56 and Buschkamp used a time of 22:31.21 for her seventh-place showing.

Isabel Rolfes came in 24th with Ryell Haug right on her heels in 25th. Freshman, Jaden Opfer came in 33rd.

“We had two girls in the top 10, then Isabel and Ryell finished together,” Hartington-Newcastle coach, Lisa Rolfes said. “And Jaden Opfer cut minutes off of her time.”

For the Wildcats, Elks’ brother, Alex was 13th, Isaac Hernandez-Santiago was 18th, Aidan Anderson was 43rd Braeden Kleinschmit was 56th.

Battle Creek’s Miles Clausen led the Braves to the team title with a time of 17:16.93 which won the meet.

Andrew Kastl of Norfolk Catholic was second in 17:51.13 and Myles Allen was third for the Braves with a time of 17:55.01.

Battle Creek took the title with 18 points,Norfolk Catholic was second with 39 and Homer was third with 42.

“We are peaking at just the right time as we are going into championship weeks,” Rolfes said.We have the conference meet this week with districts the following week.

The inaugural Greater Northeast Activities Conference Meet will get underway Oct. 10 at Plainview.
