WALTHILL — The Wynot Blue Devils defense dominated in their Friday afternoon football matchup against the Walthill Blue Jays.
Wynot shut down their opponents rushing attack, holding the home team to just 50 yards. Meanwhile, the Blue Devil offense was rolling as they lit up the scoreboard to earn the 50-8 win and improved their season record to 4-2 with the win.
Andrew Haberman led the Blue Devils offense rushing for 90 yards, 2 touchdowns and catching a third score as well.
The Walthill offense was paced by Markale Harlan who threw for 114 yards and had the Blue Jays lone touchdown.
On defense Killian Steinhaus and Braylon Hans had interceptions and Carter Hans had a fumble recovery for the Blue Devils.
Walthill’s defense was led by Grant Sage with six tackles and Presley Warner had a fumble recovery for the Blue Jays.
The game did not start out that well for the Blue Devils offense as they coughed up a fumble on the first play from scrimmage at their own 33 yard line. The Wynot defense would bail them out as they held on downs.
Wynot would answer on their second offense set as Andrew Haberman raced around the right side for a 54 yard touchdown run. The PAT was no good as the Blue Devils took the early 6-0 lead.
Walthill went three and out on their next offensive try and the Blue Devils went on a 55 yard drive capped by a 10 yard scamper by Devin Brummer. Brummer connected with Lane Heimes for the PAT pass as Wynot increased their lead to 14-0.
Wynot’s offense was quickly back on the field when Killian Steinhaus would pick off an errant Blue Jay pass at the 30 yard line. Five plays later Andrew Haberman found a seam up the middle for the 9 yard touchdown run. Haberman also caught the PAT pass to up the Blue Devils lead to 22-0 at the end of the first quarter.
The Blue Devils continued to find success early in the second period. Wynot went on another scoring drive capped by an 18 yard touchdown toss from Devin Brummer to Andrew Haberman for his third score of the night. Brummer then hit Jed Nelson for the PAT pass to push Wynot’s lead to 30-0.
A Blue Jay turnover would result in Wynot’s next score. Braylon Hans would intercept a pass in the left flat and no one was going to catch the speedster as he raced down the sideline for a 65 yard scoring run. The PAT run was stopped but the Blue Devils lead had ballooned to 36-0 at halftime.
Wynot’s defense continue to control the tempo of the game in the third quarter and their offense was on a roll. The Blue Devils would march 63 yards in 7 plays. Lane Heimes took an option pitch and raced 30 yards to paydirt. Devin Brummer scrambled in for the PAT as Wynot held the 44-0 lead.
A fumble recovery by Wynot‘s Carter Hans gave the ball right back at their own 35 yardline. Wynot completed the following drive with a 1 yard plunge by Kameron Koch. The PAT run was stopped as that finished the scoring for Blue Devils with the 50-0 lead.
Reserves mopped up in the fourth quarter for Wynot. Walthill got on the scoreboard late on a 48-yard bomb from Markale Harlan to Carter Nunez. Harlan hit Sage Grant for the PAT to make the final 50-8 in favor of the Blue Devils.
Wynot travels to Winside Friday.
