WAYNE — Hartington’s Barb Uhing was a candidate for the Wayne State College Homecoming Queen.
Linda Boyer and Miles Brey, were named as the Wayne State College Homecoming queen and king Saturday.
Boyer, a junior from Silver City, Iowa, is majoring in medical technology. Brey, a senior from Upper Marlboro, Md., is majoring in earth sciences.
Other king candidates were Mike McMorrow of Omaha, Jeryl Nelson of Oakland, Scott Sherry of Laurel, Troy True of Wausa, and Mike Whetstone of Columbus. Other queen candidates were Cheryl Barnes of Omaha, Angela Powell of Akron, Iowa, Valentina Tobon - Kielland of Lynch., and Beth Mason of Omaha.

HARTINGTON —The national Board for Respiratory Care has announced that Joan Marie Hochstein has fulfilled the educational and experience requirements for qualification as a respiratory therapist. She has satisfactorily completed the written and clinical simulation examinations and the equivalent, to demonstrate professional competence in this field at the advanced level; now, therefore, The National Board for Respiratory Care hereby formall recognizes that this individual is a Registered Respiratory Therapist.

HARTINGTON —Hartington Public High School students selected Mandy Kleinschmit and Josh Climer as their 1994 Homecoming King and Queen. Mandy is the daughter of Audrey Kleinschmit and Roman Kleinschmit. Josh is the son of Jim and Marjorie Climer.

ST. HELENA—A fire destroyed a hay barn and storage shed at the Kevin Klug farm near St. Helena. The blaze was reported around noon. Fire fighters were able to contain the blaze to the hay barn area preserving other buildings and nearby trees.

HARTINGTON—Two area teens were honored for their outstanding work in 4-H. Lachelle Fiscus, Coleridge and Ray Lammers, Hartington, walked away with the top two awards during the annual Cedar County Awards Banquet at the Hartington City Auditorium.

HARTINGTON — There are a lot of hard questions yet to be answered before a proposal to merge the Wynot and Hartington Public Schools could move forward. Both school boards met in front of about 100 people here for a two-hour meeting Tuesday.
The previous joint meeting in Wynot focused more on the emotions of possibly shutting down the Wynot school. Tuesday’s meeting involved more of the nuts and bolts of merger process.

ST. JAMES — A few years ago, the old Catholic school in St. James went through quite a transformation, as a use was found in the old building when it became the St. James Market Place.
Now the house that stands next door, which served as the rectory to St. James parish, is getting a makeover all its own, and will become the Rose Gate Inn.
Randy and Gloria Anderson, Wynot, acquired the house a year ago, with dreams of turning it into a comfortable place for people to stay.

GRAND ISLAND - A Coleridge native has been named as the new Bishop of Grand Island.
Msgr. William Dendinger, who grew up in Coleridge, has served the past two and one half years as pastor of St. Stephen the Martyr parish in West Omaha - the largest parish in the archdiocese with over 12,000 registered parishioners.
Before that he served as Chaplain General of the Air Force.

HARTINGTON - Although the telemarketing industry has appeared to have weathered the creation of the national do not call list, some telemarketing companies have needed to layoff employees or change the nature of their business.
Some telemarketers, for example, are doing more customer service work in which the centers receive calls from nonprofit groups, politicians and companies they have recently done business with, some telemarketing companies have shifted toward fundraising for nonprofit groups and business-to-business sales.
