1914: Man asks for jail time to better protect himself

HARTINGTON — The teachers of the county who can most conveniently attend teachers’ meetings at Hartington will meet at the County Superintendent’s office.

Oct. 9, 1914

HARTINGTON — It is not often that people go voluntarily to jail, but such was the case with one F.J.

Pierce, a piano polisher who on Wednesday applied to the county jail for admittance. The poor fellow said that he was “seeing things” and that he wanted to be locked up as a means of self-protection. Yesterday the County Attorney and Dr. Dorsey visited the man and later sent word to his brother, C.S. Pierce of Marshall, Minnesota.

HARTINGTON — Mr. Merten of the Merten Construction Company, the architect who drew the plans, and the members of the School Board are inspecting the new school building this week for the purpose of ascertaining how nearly the building conforms to the contract.

Oct. 9, 1924 

YANKTON, SD. — It is planned to hold an open air church service on Sunday during the big celebration of the opening of the Meridian Highway bridge. It is thought that Archbishop Marty will be present that day and it is planned to hold a big open air meeting on the convent grounds. If this meeting materializes, it will probably be the largest religious gathering ever held in this section of the country.

FORDYCE — Dr. H.M. Hans had a very narrow escape from a very serious accident on Monday while at the Mrs. Theresa Schulte farm, as an infurious horse kicked him just above the right eye. The doctor had been called there to render medical attention to the animal and while doing it, the horse resented it and planted a hoof just above the doctor’s eye, cutting a deep gash.

FORDYCE — Mrs. M. Hass is leaving Fordyce and moving to Wynot where she will make her future home.
