75 Years Ago - Oct. 6, 1949 RANDOLPH – The first killing freeze in the Randolph territory was reported on September 29 this year, as the mercury dropped to 28 degrees that morning. Average date of the first killing freeze in northeast Nebraska, according to the Norfolk weather bureau office, is October 4.

The night before there was a light freeze. While the front on Thursday morning was considered killing, much vegetation was unaffected. Almost all of the corn was matured enough to be out of danger from frost.

After the sub-freezing temperatures, the weather turned much warmer, with temperatures in the 70s and 60s during the day and much cooler at night.

60 Years Ago - Oct. 1, 1964 RANDOLPH – Price support loans for the 1964 corn crop will average $1.02 per bushel in Cedar county, Vincent C. Anderson, chairman, Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation county Committee, has announced. This compares with the 1963 crop loan rate of 99c per bushel for the county.

The 1964 loan rate, plus a pricesupport payment of 15 cents a bushel gives a total price-support average rate of $1.17 per bushel for the 1964 crop in the county. While the loan rate varies according to the grades and qualities of individual crops, the price-support payment per bushel is the same for all farms.

The chairman reminded growers that price support on the 1964 corn crop will be available only to producers participating in the 1964 Feed Grain Program. *** RANDOLPH – Gale Bleasdell and Marvin Closter represented this community at a regional highway meeting held September 17 at Wayne.

Included in the Highway Commission report was assurance that a contract would be let this winter on a Highway 20 project for paving west of the junction of Highways 20 and 81 to meet with the paving east of Osmond.

The commission also stated that the 1965-66 biennium will include some resurfacing and widening of Highway 20 west of Willis.

50 Years Ago - Oct. 3, 1974 RANDOLPH – Work has begun on outside renovation of the outside of the St. Frances Catholic Church by Mid-Continental Waterproofing Co. of Fort Scott, Kans.

Work that will be done includes repainting brick work on church, sandblasting all stone surfaces, repainting all outside wood trim and generally cleaning the outside surface.

After the work is completed the outside of the church will then be given a transparent silicone treatment which will seal and waterproof the entire building. *** RANDOLPH – Annual Homecoming festivities for the Randolph Public Schools will be held this Friday, October 4.

The homecoming parade which will include floats prepared by various classes and organizations, the band and homecoming royalty candidates will begin at three o’clock at the West School, proceeding one block south of Broadway, three blocks east, a block north to Home Oil Co. and up Broadway St. to the laundromat and a block south. Following the parade, a pep rally will be held at the intersection on Broadway and Main St.

Candidates are Dwight Rossbach, Gail Van Slyke, Patty DeLong, Cary Kruse, Dennis Horan, Margaret Wattier, Gene Korth and Holly Olberding.

40 Years Ago - Oct. 4, 1984 RANDOLPH – Congregate meals were started at the Senior Citizen Center in Randolph on Monday with a large crowd in attendance for the first day’s meal.

A total of 103 meals were served on Monday at the Center, and any senior citizen that wishes to eat the noon meal are required to call in their reservation the afternoon before.

The directors of the Randolph Senior Citizen Center hired Mrs.

Floyd (Alfreida) Moser at a recent meeting of the group. Volunteer help is also used by the center in its activities. Any senior that wishes to help with any activity is asked to contact Mr. or Mrs. Gus Marreel for more information. *** RANDOLPH – Harold Korth of rural Randolph gained runner-up honors on Saturday at the Nebraska State Hand Cornhusking Contest.

The Randolph farmer picked a total of 690 pounds and netted 622.8 pounds to finish behind Howard Carlson of Lincoln. The winner netted 645 pounds in the 30 minutee picking contest. Actually Korth picked more corn in the campaign, but ended up in second place after gleanings and husks were deducted. The champion from Lincoln picked 665 pounds before deductions were made.

30 Years Ago - Oct. 5, 1994 RANDOLPH – Volk Farms of Battle Creek was the location for the District Dairy Judging Contest on Tuesday, Sept. 27.

In the Senior Division at the contest, the team took first place, earning a purple ribbon and a trophy. Individual placings were Jeff Graham, 2nd place and purple ribbon; Josh Graham, blue ribbon and Adam Gall, red ribbon. Others participating in the senior division were Jeremy Olson and Megan Patent.

The Junior Division team earned first place, receiving a purple ribbon and a trophy. Individual placings were Brian Junck, 1st place, purple ribbon and trophy; Jon Graham, red ribbon and Scott Schutt, red ribbon. Matt Keifer also participated in the junior division. *** RANDOLPH – RHS Homecoming Royal Court included Richard Sheppard, Jeremy Olson, Shane Lienemann, Randy Korth, Homecoming King Erick Arens, Queen Jill Sporleder, Christie Larsen, Regina Reineke, Heather Walz, Attendants Jenny Dowling, Jim Burbach, Beth Rogers, Christopher Bradley, Heather Scott, David Meyer, 1993 Queen Stephanie Bradley and 1993 King Scott Gubbels.

20 Years Ago - Oct. 6, 2004 RANDOLPH – Crowned 2004 Homecoming King and Queen last Friday night were Levi Borst, son of Randy and Mag Borst, and Kari Gubbels, daughter of Steve and Marcia Gubbels, all of Randolph.

RANDOLPH – Last Wednesday, sometime between 1:30 and 2:30 p.m., a man ‘carried his cross’ through Randolph on Highway 20.

This wooden cross rests on his shoulder as he walks along the side of the road, passing along the message, as the cross states in bold letters - JESUS LOVES YOU.

The man is Bob Hands and he waits for motorists’ curiosity to get the better of them and they stop to inquire just what it is he’s doing. Bob then jumps at the chance to visit and one of the first questions out of his mouth after a warm greeting is, “Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your personal savior?”

10 Years Ago - Oct. 8, 2014 RANDOLPH – A new ice cream shop is in the works for downtown Randolph.

Sarah Kilmurry and Tara Hillman, who are both Randolph residents, submitted the highest bid for the property that had housed the Randolph City Office at one time.

The bid included a cashier’s check for $5,200 and a business plan for an ice cream shop.

LINCOLN – The Randolph School is one of four Nebraska schools that was recently recognized with a national award.

Randolph Elementary School has receive theNational Blue Ribbon School recognition as a 2014 Exemplary High Performing School.

RANDOLPH – About 30 people gathered last Wednesday night to learn more about the Randolph Comprehensive Plan. The long awaited demographic section was presented in a two hour session and covered population, building, median income, and employment.
