1914: Library Board approves plans for new building

A Look Back

Oct. 2, 1914

HARTINGTON — The Catholic Church of Menominee is soon to have a new pastor to succeed the late Father Rothkagel, who died recently in a hospital in South Dakota. Rev. Father Hundt of Brunswick has been appointed by the Right Rev. Bishop Scannell to take care of this important parish and will soon enter upon his duties here. The new pastor bears the highest credentials and will no doubt prosper here.

HARTINGTON — A very exciting football game was held on the school campus last Friday afternoon between Ponca and our school. The game was in favor of the home team until a couple of our best men were injured. Then, they were accidentally caught asleep and went through once. They had the good fortune of kicking it over a few times, making the final score 28-19, in their favor. The boys are going to take the Newcastle fellows on for a football fight here next Friday at 2 p.m.

HARTINGTON — The Hartington Library Board held a meeting last evening and looked over the plans and specifications for the new library building. After careful consideration, it was moved and seconded that the plans be adopted and in a short time, the board will be ready to receive bids for the erection of the structure. In the meantime, the balance of the money for the purchase of the Baptist property has been raised. The Board has decided to offer the old church building for sale to the highest bidder, the building to be moved as it stands or wrecked and hauled away.

This is a good chance for someone to get material for a good building at a greatly reduced price. It was suggested, also that the parsonage and barn also be put up for sale. This is a finely built house and is well located that there is no doubt of it bringing a good price. The Library Board is working hard and with the hearty cooperation of all of our citizens they hope to see the Hartington Public Library finished and ready for occupancy before spring.

HARTINGTON — Dan Cupid laughs at locksmiths and leaps lightly over the barrier of age.

Wm. H. Dimick, aged 76, of Lyme NH, yesterday secured in Cedar County a license to wed Laura A. Churchill, 78, Wynot.

Old age had not dimmed the eye, nor seared the heart. They will wed and live, “happy ever after.”

County Judge Bryant was acquainted with the bridegroom indirectly years ago in New Hampshire.
