Cardinals drop third straight

Cardinals drop third straight

CREIGHTON - For the second straight week, the Randolph Cardinal football team hit the road. This time, the Cardinals traveled to Creighton to take on the Bulldogs.

For the third straight week, the Cardinals took a loss as Creighton ran away with the game 66-12.

The Bulldogs went up 38-0 in the first quarter before Randolph answered with a score to open the second frame.

Gage Jensen rambled in from the six for the Cardinals, making the score 38-6.

Just before the halftime intermission, Randolph found the end zone again when quarterback Dayton Winkelbauer ran through the Creighton defense with a 27-yard dash to pay dirt to make the score 60-12 heading into the break and setting up the continuous clock for the final half.

Neither team scored in the third quarter but the Bulldogs’ Robinson Ladeaux scored his fourth touchdown of the game in the final 12 minutes to get to the final score.

Winkelbauer and Jensen combined for 54 yards rushing on the night along with the two scores. Winkelbauer had a tough night through the air, completing 3-of-11 aerials for 49 yards and two interceptions. On the other sideline, Taylor Nilson completed 3-of-6 passes with all three completions accounting for six points.

Defensively, Cole Jensen had an active night for the Cardinals getting in on 14 tackles including four solo stops. Ryan Engel recorded 10 tackles and Tate Brodersen had eight tackles.

Ty Sievers and Xavier Smith each pounced on a Creighton fumble.

The Cardinals will regroup and look for their fist win of the 2024 campaign at home when they will entertain Wynot on Sept. 20 in a Homecoming showdown.

The Blue Devils are the returning Class D-2 runner-up but come into the game with a 1-2 record. Wynot defeated Creighton back on Sept. 6, 34-28 after dropping its opening game 36-12 to Crofton and last week’s contest with Archangels Catholic 50-14.
