Runners compete in large meet, set goals

LAUREL - Randolph cross country ran in the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Invitational on Sept. 12 at the Cedarview Country Club here.

Homer won both the boys and girls team titles and Ponca was second in both divisions.

Homer bettered Ponca 15-27 to claim the top prize for the boys and the teams tied with 18 points in the girls with the Lady Knights getting the nod in a tie-breaker.

Ponca’s Gannon Pfister won the boys individual race with a time of 18 minutes, 6.72-seconds while Micah Cuevas of Newman Grove/St. Edward was second in 18:11.71.

The Cardinals’ two runners, Kamdin Worlein and and Brecken Shearer placed 47th and 51st respectively.

“They both are really improving in every meet,” Randolph coach Tom Shafer said. “They have each knocked over a minute off their times; they are working hard.”

The Lady Knights were paced by Lilly Harris, who was second individually with a time of 21:37.20, just under 23 seconds behind the winner, Ava Brennan of Ponca who finished in 21:14.37.

Randolph’s Emily Gilliland was 24th after placing eighth last week.

“I like cross country when I’m done, like the self-accomplishment part of it,” the freshman said. “It feels good to be able to run the three miles.”

She also is learning, somewhat disappointedly she didn’t do more running over the summer heading into her first high school season on the course.

“I really wished I would have ran more over the summer. I will next summer,” Gilliland said. “My goal this year is to try to get to state. I’ll keep working towards that, it would be great.”

The Cardinals and Lady Cardinal were set to be back in action Sept. 16 in the Neligh-Oakdale Invitational at the Antelope County Country Cluband will run at Twin Creeks Golf Course in Pender on Sept. 19.
