1949: Volunteer Air Reserve Training squadron formed

75 Years Ago - Sept. 22, 1949 RANDOLPH – The first meeting of Flight “D,” 9690 Volunteer Air Reserve Training Squadron, now being organized, will be held at the American Legion hall, Wilson-Abst Post 113, in Randolph, Nebr., at 8 p.m. on Friday, September 23.

According to the regular air force instructors at Sioux City all USAF Reserve Personnel residing in the Randolph area may submit application for assignment to this unit at the meeting. These instructors will be present at the meeting to explain the new Reserve Program.

The announcement was made this week by T/Sgt.C Charles F. Englemann of the headquarters of 9690th Volunteer Training Squadron at 420 Jones street.

RANDOLPH – Mr. and Mrs. Claude Sellon, who have lived the past year at Missoula, Mont., have moved to Randolph, and Mr. Sellon will be district manager for Murphy Products, a position he formerly held.

Mr. and Mrs. Sellon have moved into the house on the McCune acreage in the Northwest part of town.

60 Years Ago - Sept. 17, 1964 RANDOLPH – In action taken Monday evening, the Board of Education authorized the hiring of Mrs. Zach Boughn of Newcastle, Wyo. to the Randolph Public School faculty.

The former Mrs. Julia Moody’s marriage to Mr. Boughn was an event of September 4. Mrs. Boughn will teach mainly English courses in the Randolph High School.

The school has been operating this far into the term with one less high school teacher than last year. Mrs. Boughn is scheduled to assume her duties Monday morning.

RANDOLPH – The Randolph Fire Department was called on Tuesday evening to the Donald Coulter farm to extinguish a fire which had originated in and under an oil heating stove.

Mrs. Coulter had lit the stove to take the chill off the rooms when the stove burst into flames. This was the first time the stove had been used since last season and in some way fuel had gotten under the stove and ignited. Quick thinking on the part of Mr. Coulter, with the use of a chemical extinguisher they had in the home, saved the home from extensive damage.

The firemen were enroute to the Coulter home when the Coulters called a second time to tell them they had the fire extinguished. There was smoke damage and the floor under the stove was burned to some extent.

50 Years Ago - Sept. 19, 1974 RANDOLPH – The varsity cheerleaders who will be leading the Pep Club and Cardinal fans in cheering Friday night in the first home game of the season against Laurel are: Jeanie Kruger, Denise Horan, Lori Hesling, Patty DeLong and Holly Olberding.

RANDOLPH – In their first outing of the season, Coach Marvin Beardshear’s Cardettes Volleyball team were victorious in their matches with the Laurel gals on Thursday at Laurel.

The varsity played two matches with scores of 15-15 and 15-1. Holly Olberding served for 14 points of which 10 were not returned. Gwen Lackas scored six points, with none of her serves returned. Gwen also did very well at hitting the ball. Cindy Van Auker did very well also.

The B squad won their first match with scores of 15-3, 14-16 and 15-11. Lori Lackas served for 12 points.

RANDOLPH – The Randolph High Cards dropped their second game of the year on Friday night when Pierce made the Cards their victim 26 to 6 in a game played at Pierce.

Coach Jim Blessen said he felt that the Cards played a better game against Pierce than the week before, but mistakes still plagued the team. He went on and stressed that in the opinion of the coaching staff that the defense played a good ball game for the most part but feel that the offensive line’s blocking left a lot to be desired. Coach Blessen went on to say that if as much improvement is made this coming week and then offense and defense will make fewer mistakes they should have a good game against Laurel.

The Cards will have a home game this week when Laurel will come to the Randolph park for a 7:30

40 Years Ago - Sept. 20, 1984 HARTINGTON – Cedar County Assessor Deanna Anderson this week released valuation figures for Cedar County towns and school districts that indicate that Randolph had an increase in valuation of about 3/4 million dollars, and the Randolph School District increased about 1 1/2 million.

According to the Cedar County Assessor the increase in valuation across the county comes from new buildings and changes in farm ground such as dry land crops that are now irrigated or land that was plowed up from pasture and put into crops. Mrs. Anderson said that the same values were used from a year ago and the same manual was used in figuring the valuations.

RANDOLPH – In volleyball action, the RHS Cardettes won two games this past week as they defeated Neligh 15-1 and 15-7 and Crofton 15-4 and 15-11.

On the football field, the Randolph High Cards upped their season record to three wins and no losses on Friday night as they shut out Wausa by a score of 19-0 in a game played down at the local field.

30 Years Ago - Sept. 21, 1994 RANDOLPH – Jeff Graham has earned the opportunity to represent Nebraska at the National 4-H Dairy Judging Contest in Madison, Wisconsin. Jeff received second in the State of Nebraska at the State Dairy Judging Contest during the Nebraska State Fair. Jeff will be sponsored by the Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben at the National Dairy Judging I Contest. The contest will take place during the National Dairy Conference which will be the first week of October.

RANDOLPH – Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5545 and its Auxiliary are joining with thousands of other V.F.W. Posts and Auxiliaries across the United States in an effort to remember the 50th Anniversary of most Major World War II events which will occur during the latter half of 1994 and throughout 1995. The Randolph Community is talking to become involved in commemorating the contributions and sacrifices of World War II veterans, their families and those who served on the home front.

One such commemorative event will bet the rededication of Veterans Memorial Park on Wednesday, Sept. 28, at 7:30 p.m. at the entrance to the park. Three new flags for the park’s archway will also be dedicated at this time.

The public is cordially invited to attend. *** RANDOLPH – Council members met briefly Monday, Sept. 19, 5:30 p.m., to discuss the possibility that Randolph may initiate a local 911 program.

Previously, Mayor Roger Johnson said Randolph can put in the same system with local control which Cedar county officials are offering.

At a possible cost of $925 to install and $60 a month plus equipment to display information.

20 Years Ago - Sept. 22, 2004 RANDOLPH – The Randolph City Council approved its 2004-05 budget after a special hearing Sept. 14.

All members from the council were present to hear the final budget proposal. It was decided to raise the mill levy by .00875 cents. The tax rate on the general fund for the new budget year is .412509 cents compared to .403751 cents last year.

The bond fund was set at .090101 cents compared to .0806 for last year which showed a slight drop.

RANDOLPH – When people look for things to entertain their family, most look for something that provides fellowship with other people, good conversation, good food, some exercise and low cost.

Randy and Jenny Gubbels have found a hobby that provides all of these.

They square dance. They belong to the Laurel square dance club, the Town Twirlers. *** RANDOLPH – The Randolph Community Club met on Sept. 14 at the VFW/Bank basement to review information from the fair and discuss other projects.

The final report for the Randolph Community Fair showed a profit of $397.32 for this year.

A donation of $571 from the softball tournament was given to the park fund to be used for the restroom/concession facility project at the baseball field.

10 Years Ago - Sept. 24, 2014 RANDOLPH – Lisa Korth and Mitchell Nordhues were selected Queen and King of the 2014 Randolph High School Homecoming festivities.

HARTINGTON – The U.S. Dept. of Agriculture is forecasting a bumper crop in beans and slightly lower yields in corn making it an overall good year to be a farmer in Cedar County.

Analysts are hoping prices remain stable and believe the lower yields in corn will mean higher prices at market.

Several reasons persist in the outlook for the Midwest, including an abundant season of rain in the past three months following a drought that spanned three years.

HARTINGTON – Buildings damaged or destroyed during the tornado and storms this summer need to be resported to the Cedar County Assessor’s Office.

Cedar County Assessor Don Hoesing is urging property owners to contact his office.

“They can call the Assessor’s Office or they can stop in - whatever is convenient for them,” Hoesing said. “We will go over their file.”

40 Years Ago Sept. 20, 1984

RANDOLPH – Marvin Lienemann comes to the end of the field of alfalfa on Saturday afternoon in a field north and west of Randolph. Mr. Lienemann was in the process of windrowing the third cutting of alfalfa. Stacks from earlier cuttings can be seen on the left of the picture. Farmers in the immediate Randolph area are in the process of cutting the alfalfa for the third time, and waiting for the bean and corn harvest to get underway later this month or the first part of October.
