Wynot falls to 1-2 with loss to Archangels

WYNOT — The Wynot Blue Devils season record fell to 1-2 on Friday as the Archangel Defenders rolled to a 50-14 win to improve their record to 3-0 on the young season.

Wynot had trouble stopping the Defenders ground game as Archangel would hold a 505 to 253 advantage in total yards for the game. The Defenders would dominate on defense with three interceptions and a fumble recovery to help them to the big win.

Archangel’s offense was led by Gavin Geilenkinchen who rushed for 279 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Wynot’s offense was paced by Devin Brummer who went 24 for 41 for 177 but had 3 interceptions in the game.

Wynot’s leaders on defense were Jed Nelson and Andrew Haberman with 11 tackles each.

Archangels defense was paced by Devon Baumgart with two interceptions and Gage Braun with a fumble recovery.

Archangel got on the scoreboard early as on the second play from scrimmage Gavin Geilenkinchen would bolt 55 yards to pay dirt.

Ethan Wieseler hit Mason Geilenkinchen for the PAT as Archangel held the early 8-0 lead.

Wynot would go three and out and on the Defenders next possession Gielenkirchen broke free again and raced 39 yard for his second score of the game. The PAT pass to Tucker Czarnick was good and Archangel’s lead had grown to 16-0.

Wynot would strike on the kickoff as Lane Heimes took off on a run weaving his way for a 65 yard journey to paydirt. The PAT pass was no good as the Blue Devils were on the board trailing 16-6.

Archangel continued to find success from long range as in the final minutes of the opening period once again Gavin Gielenkirchen raced 46 yards for his third scoring run.

Ethan Wieseler ran in the PAT to give the Defenders the 24-6 lead at the end of one quarter of play.

On their second possession of the second quarter Archangel was on the move again. Aided by a 24 yard first down catch by Tucker Czarnick the Defenders crossed into Blue Devil territory. Ethan Wieseler ran for another first down and a 29 yard catch and run by Tucker Czarnick put another score up for the Defenders. The PAT was stopped as the Defenders lead had ballooned to 30-6.

An interception stopped the Blue Devils offense at their own 25 yard line but Wynot’s defense held.

Wynot got a 20 yard reception over the middle by Kotner Koch to move deep into Defender’s red zone. Devin Brummer ran a bootleg around the left side for the Blue Devils touchdown. An option pitch left to Nixson Heimes was good for the PAT to make the score 30-14 at halftime.

Wynot would receive the second half kickoff and moved the ball deep downfield. Unfortunately the drive was stopped by an interception in the endzone by the Defenders Devin Baumgart.

Archangel would go on a 65 yard drive all on the ground. Behind the hard running of Nolan Wieseler and Gavin Gielenkirchen and aided by a key facemask call on the Blue Devils the Defenders drove the ball deep into Blue Devils territory.

Gielenkirchen bowled his way into the endzone from seven yards out for the score. Matthew Zach caught the PAT to increasing the Defenders lead to 38-14.

Wynot next possession was cut short by a second Devin Baumgart interception. The Defenders would strike quickly on a 31 yard bomb to Tucker Czarnick. The PAT run was stopped as the third quarter wound to an end with Archangel in command leading 44-14.

Archangel would put one more score on the board at the 4:50 mark of final period Gavin Geilenkirchen broke a 60 yard run down to the Defenders 2 yard line. Wyatt Brandl dove in for the 2 yard touchdown. The PAT run was stuffed but this game had been decided early as Archangel picked up the 50-14 win.

Wynot is at Randolph to take on the Cardinals next Friday.
