FORDYCE — Forces, which have altered the structure of the state’s banking system have been felt in Cedar County, as evidenced by the recent creation of a new bank.

Cedar Security Bank opened for business on Sept. 4 with offices in Wynot and Fordyce.

The new bank evolved from the Wynot Cooperative Credit Association and the Fordyce Cooperative Credit Association, which has been in those communities for 50 and 49 years, respectively.

The change was a matter of necessity, according to Don Wieseler, president of the new bank, and Ray Promes, chairman of the board of directors and cashier.

The Neb. Dept. of Banking had been encouraging the state’s 26 cooperative credit associations to reorganize, and, after they lost their insurance, immediate action was necessary.

The collapse of Commonwealth Savings and Loan, a Lincoln saving and loan institution, jeopardized the future of the Neb. Depository Insurance Guarantee Corporation.

The state’s remaining industrial savings and loans and cooperative savings and loans were left without insurance for depositors, as a result.

Wieseler said they could have converted to a credit union or merged with another bank, but instead decided to go after a bank charter of their own.
