2004: Hartington Community Complex is ready for action

HARTINGTON — The Santee Sioux Tribe wants to take a Cedar County convenience store it owns off of the county tax rolls.

Cedar County Assessor Don Hoesing said property taxes on the land amount to just under $4,000 a year.

Members of the Tribe’s economic development department and attorneys for the Tribe met with the Cedar County Commission Tuesday to discuss the proposal and options the Tribe and County could face.

HARTINGTON — The Cedar County Commission approved a $7.5 million budget for 2004-05. The budget is $1.3 million less than the current budget. Cedar County Clerk Dave Dowling said the decreases were made possible because of a $400,000 decrease in the county’s Road Department fund. Smaller department decreases and a decrease in the General Fund account for the rest.

WASHINGTON — The Wynot Fire and Rescue Department will receive $41,190 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) The funds can be used for training, wellness and fitness, firefighting equipment, personal protective equipment and modifications to fire stations.

HARTINGTON — City Council members accepted a bid from J-G Paving, Grand Island, after the bid was lowered by over $4,000.

“Every problem will be fixed with my bid,” said Martin Daley, who met with the Council.

Council members agreed to spend $60,000 to complete necessary repair work on the city streets, which will include milling down to the concrete and laying new asphalt on a portion of Main, State, Centre and Broadway Streets and a portion of the intersections on Madison Street.

“We can’t go another winter without doing something,” said Councilman Gerald Thoene.
